Toyota 4Runner is an SUV manufactured by Toyota and sold around the world from 1984 until now. In Japan it was known as the Toyota Hilux Surf. Original 4Runner was a compact SUV, and no more than a Toyota pick-up truck with a fiberglass shell over the bed, but an important model, since the experience of independent development in a cross between a mid-size and full-size SUV. All are built on the 4Runner Toyota Tahara plant in Tahara, Aichi, Japan, or at Hino Motors’ Hamura, Japan plant, and in Brazil. The mid-size crossover SUV, the Highlander co.
In 1986 all U.S. market Toyota pickup trucks (and the 4Runner) underwent a major change as the design of the suspension was changed from a solid front axle with an independent front suspension. Track width was also increased by three inches. These changes in trucks more comfortable on-road, and improved stability and handling. However, this change demonstrably reduced the truck off-road capabilities. Outside the U.S., the Hilux Surf (similar to the 4Runner) also got the new independent suspension, marketed as Hi-Trac.
The pickups in those markets retained the more rugged and, if less refined, solid axle configuration. The 4Runner grille changed in the three segment types for the two segments on all 4Runner grille in 1986. Tops were color-matched to blue, red and some gold 4Runner, while other body colors were still sold with white or black tops. During 1984-1986 much 4Runner were imported to the U.S. without a backseat. With only two seats the vehicle could be classified as a truck (instead of a sports vehicle) and could skirt the higher customs duties placed on sport and pleasure vehicles. Most aftermarket seats and seat belts were added by North American dealers after they are introduced.
