The A-140E automatic transmission is electronically controlled. Transmission of change and torque converter lock-up are controlled by an electronic control transmission (ECT) Electronic Control Unit (ECU). Control unit is designated by the ECT ECU. NOTE: ECT ECU is combined with the engine ECU in a single unit.

This control unit is considered as the engine and ECT ECU. See Figs. 1-3. In this article, control unit is referred to as ECT ECU on all models. The ECT ECU receives information from various input devices and uses this information to control the No. 1 and 2 for the transmission solenoids to change and lock-up solenoid for torque converter lock-up. A model to select is located on the center console (Camry).

See Figs. 1-3. Contains a pattern select POWER (depression) and NORMAL (released) in the operating position. Model where select is depressed, the transmission upshifts and down will be greater than the speed of the vehicle with switch released. An indicator light shows the pattern to select the position. The Overdrive (OD) switch is mounted on the lever. See Figs. 1-3. When OD switch is depressed to the ON position, transmission will be moving to the 4th gear when lever is in “D” position, and OD OFF light on the dashboard will go.

When OD is released to the OFF position, transmission will be moving to the 3rd speed, and OD OFF light on the dashboard lights. The transmission is equipped with a change of lock and key lock system. Shift lock system prevents lever to be moved from park unless the brake pedal is pressed. In case of malfunction, a lever may be released by pressing shift lock override button, located close to leverage. Key lock prevents the key from being moved from ACC to LOCK position unless the ignition switch lever is in the park.
