Timing Belt PDF Installation Guide
Timing belts are available in may tooth profiles (shapes), pitches and pitch lengths. The three principle dimensions of timing belts are… Tooth Pitch, Belt Pitch Length and Belt width. Tooth Pitch is the distance between two adjacent tooth centres as measured on the pitch line. The theoretical pitch line lies within the tensile member of the belt. Belt Pitch Length is the total length (circumference) of the belt measured along the pitch line of the belt. Belt Width is the distance across the belt measured parallel to the teeth. On the sprockets (pulleys), pitch is the distance be- tween tooth centres and is measured on the sprocket’s pitch diameter. The sprocket pitch diameter coincides with the belt pitch line and is always greater than the sprocket outside diameter.
General Information Timing belts appeared on domestic cars in the mid 1960s. They replaced chain drive and gear systems because they are quieter, less expensive and need no lubrication. Timing belts should be checked frequently for signs of wear or damage and re-tensioned when necessary. Always follow vehicle manufacturer’s recommendation for replacement of timing belts. These vary from one manufacturer to another. Tensioning methods also vary among manufacturers. Some car makers have de- signed special tools for installing timing belts. Use of any other tool could mean damage to the belt, pulleys and possibly the engine.
To Replace Timing Belts There are no general procedures that appy to every job. To provide an idea of what steps would be taken in a job of this type, here’s the step-by-step procedure recommended by one manufacturer. Remember this is just an example. It is important that you check your particular vehicle manufacturer’s maintenance manual for specific instructions. A quick reading of the manual instructions should help you determine if this is a job you wish to perform.
Belt Removal STEP 1: Turn the crankshaft (in the direction of normal rotation) to TDC by aligning the timing mark on the engine front cover with the “0” mark on the crankshaft damper. The distributor rotor should be lined up with the index mark on the distributor body to be in No.1 cylinder firing position. STEP 2: Remove any belts, pulleys or hoses interfering with removal of timing belt cover. STEP 3: Remove belt cover. STEP 4: Loosen belt tensioenr adjustment bolt. STEP 5: Pry tensioner away from the belt and retighten the tensioner adjustment bolt.
Belt Installation STEP 1: Make sure timing marks are properly aligned. a. Crankshaft pointer at TDC. b. Distributor rotor aligned with timing mark on distributor housing. c. Cam pulley timing pointer aligned with mark on engine block. STEP 2: Place belt over pulleys. STEP 3: Loosen the tensioner adjustment bolt so that it can swing back against the belt. Be careful to ease the tensioner into position. Do not let it strike the belt a hard blow. Make sure tensioner spring is engaged properly. STEP 5: Recheck timing marks. Torque the tensioner adjustment and pivot bolts to the manufacturer’s recom- mended torque (Nm) setting. STEP 6: Replace the timing belt cover and any belts, pulleys or hoses that may have been removed. Torque all bolts to the manufacturer’s recommended torque (Nm) settings. STEP 7: Start the engine, check the ignition timing and make any necessary adjustments As stated earlier, this is a procedure recommended by one manufacturer. These steps can differ significantly for the same job on another model. Be sure to check manufacturer’s maintenance manual for the proper procedure.
