Suzuki GS How To Change Your Oil and Filter PDF Manual Guide

By popular demand I have undertaken the task of documenting one of my recent changes to the oil and filter for my GS850GT. I hope you find this is useful to treat and maintain your classic Suzuki GS series motorcycles. This procedure is similar for many of the GS series bikes. However, please refer to your owner’s manual, Suzuki Shop manual, Clymer, Haynes, etc., for more information specific to your bike.

This guide assumes that you have all the parts and supplies. Do not ask me which oil to use! This is a subject of heated debates on the GSR Forum. If you use the expensive “motorcycle specific” Rotella oil or cheap oil, is the thinking of many that as long as you change the time (at least every 1,500 to 2000 miles), you can use virtually any type of engine oil. Personally, I used the Castol Syntech Blend 20w50 in summer and winter 10w40.

The oil filter is common to many motorcycle Suzuki from GS425 to GS1100. Here too there are many opinions as to which filter to use and many opinions about the quality; Fram (CH6001), Purolator (ML16800), Napa / Wix (24931), HiFlo Filter (HF133), K & N ( KH133), STP (rebranded Fram) EMGO (10-29800), Suzuki (16510-45040), etc. Personally, I buy filters from an ebay store (Breezers Motorcycle Parts) in batches of 5, including the O-ring. Sometimes they Suzuki OEM filters, sometimes HiFlo filter. I have no affiliation with other Breezers I’ma satisfied customer. I feel the same way on the filters, like me, oil, change is quite often (I change my filter at each oil change) and only one will work. If you tend to abuse your oil and go longer between changes, then you can decide to buy the more expensive, higher-quality oils and filters. Now we come to work …

I like to work on a cold bike. Many pilots pull the drain plug when the bike is warm. Hot oil flows more easily and can perform a greater number of contaminants. Then you can return after the tubes were cooled to finish the job. Four liters of oil, filter and O-ring to the ready. You will not need all that oil, but now you have extra, if needed to top your level between changes. Put your bike on the center stand, unless you’re lucky enough to have a lift.
