Suzuki Grand Vitara JLX 2009 Engine and Transmission PDF Manual
Safety equipment includes dual front, side and side-curtain airbags, four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, stability control, five head restraints and good headlights. Front and side visibility is very good, but poor rear and three-quarter-rear visibility make it difficult to judge distances when backing up.
In U.S. government tests, the Grand Vitara obtained four stars out of five for front-occupant protection in a frontal impact, and five stars for all-occupant protection in a side crash. It earned four stars for rollover resistance. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the Grand Vitara a Good rating, its highest, for driver protection in an offset frontal impact and an Acceptable rating, its second highest, for all-occupant protection in a side crash.
Engine and transmission
The 2.4-litre 4-cylinder engine puts out 166 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, providing ample power in most circumstances. Acceleration and pickup are adequate. In our test we obtained the same fuel economy, 12 L/100 km, with the 4-cylinder as we did with the 2.7-litre V6 in the 2006 model. We were puzzled by the fact that towing capacity is the same with the 2.4-litre (1,360 kg) as with the V6. With the new, 3.2-litre V6 that develops 230 horsepower and 213 pound-feet of torque, acceleration and pickup are quicker and more energetic. The accelerator is not very smooth with the V6. Oddly enough, both engines delivered the same fuel economy during our test. With a 66-litre fuel tank and the fuel economy we obtained, fuel autonomy is low.
Both automatic transmissions (four-speed with the four-cylinder and five-speed with the V6) function very smoothly and are well geared. The four-wheel-drive system with 4H, 4H Lock, 4L Lock and N modes equips all models except the JA. The JA uses an all-wheel-drive system that splits torque 47/53 front-to-rear. This torque split is also used with the four-mode system in 4H. Both systems are efficient, but the four-mode system allows you to tackle difficult off-road trails thanks to its 4L Lock mode.
On the road
The firmly tuned, fully independent system provides a very smooth ride, most of the time. It reacts firmly on some bumps whereas on others, you’ll get a well-felt bounce. Road holding is good for this type of vehicle. Ground clearance at its lowest point, under the muffler, is 19 inches. The vehicle is sensitive to side winds. The power steering is well tuned, stable and relatively precise. It has good road feel and a small turning circle. The brakes are powerful and resist well to fade after several high-speed panic stops.
