Malaysian car company Proton has recently updated its range with the addition of a new small four cylinder utility called the Jumbuck. Proton describes the Jumbuck as a cross activity vehicle and the new model targets a market that has had no offerings since the Subaru Brumby
was discontinued in 1994. The Jumbuck is certainly a versatile vehicle that has a variety of uses both in the city (deliveries, tradespeople,
etc) and on the farm.

The Jumbuck is an all-new model that was developed primarily for the Malaysian domestic market. Lotus Engineering, a subsidiary of Proton, has played a key role in the design, production methods and development of the vehicle’s ride and handling. The new Jumbuck is set to kick off a relaunch of the Proton brand in Australia, as the Malaysian manufacturer plans to release a number of new models over the next two years.

The Jumbuck uses an innovative ‘torquebox’ that connects the passenger car monocoque of the Proton Persona to a ladder type rear chassis. The combination is significantly more rigid than a Persona and strong enough to provide a payload of 550 kg. The Jumbuck uses the same drivetrain layout as the Persona with power transmitted through the front wheels only. There are two Jumbuck models on offer, the base GLi that starts at $15,490 and a sports model called the GLSi at $17,990. Both models use a five speed manual transmission (there is no automatic available). Proton has a range of customising packages available that include soft and hard tonneau covers, protective load area mats and liners, and roll- over bars.

Powering the Jumbuck is a 1.5 litre single overhead camshaft fuel injected four cylinder engine that produces 64 kW of power and 124 Nm of torque. While the output of the engine is reasonable, it is by no means a class leader and unfortunately it requires high octane, premium unleaded petrol. The entry level Jumbuck GLi has a fairly reasonable level of standard equipment for a “no-frills” workhorse that provides some good
features while helping to keep the price affordable. Some of its standard inclusions are power steering, remote central locking with alarm, a single CD radio, air conditioning, floor carpet and tilt adjustable steering. Vinyl seat and door trims add to the utilitarian theme but are nevertheless a practical choice. The Jumbuck GLSi is certainly a smarter looking vehicle than the “plain Jane” entry model.
