Land Rover Vehicle Recovery PDF Manual

Several military trucks are equipped with winches. as a way to get the most from a winch without endangering personnel and equipment abuse. For Army Only: Your vehicle technical manual completely describes the winch on your vehicle and the manner of its operation, care and maintenance. FM 20-22 explains the general characteristics, the actual capacity, and how to use.

To ensure your security, the protection of your equipment, and the success of your recovery operation, use the following as a guide:
- Verify the capacity of your winch. The capacity indicated on manufacturer’s plate is full, with a layer of cable on the drum. Each layer increases the diameter of the drum and the winch reduces capacity of only 50 percent of rated capacity, when the last layer is wound on the drum.
- Check the cable for rust, kirks, or frays.
- Estimate the total resistance. Consider grade or slope, the weight of the vehicle, and the type of terrain. Then add a safety factor.
- Check your equipment. Be sure to rig sure to overcome the resistance with the equipment available.
- Select or provide adequate anchorage. Remember, the purpose of this operation is to retrieve a vehicle, not to pull stumps.
- Rig and control maneuvers. Do not put the power winch until you examine each element of your equipment and are pleased that you have not done mistakes.
- Delete the staff of the danger zone. All persons observing the operation should be outside the angle formed by the cable under tension at a distance at least equal to the distance between the two points most distant maneuvers. Clear personnel tightening the first cable.
