There are cute utes offering more muscle, but the CR-V continues to be one of the most practical SUVs at the small end of the spectrum, chock-a-block with clever features. It’s powered by a smooth 160-hp, 2.4-liter DOHC 16-valve aluminum four. With the standard five-speed manual gearbox it can scoot to 60 mph in 8.4 seconds, and its all-disc brake system yields respectable stopping power. A new five-speed automatic option replaces the previous four-speed. The CR-V is nimble on the road, with a ride that’s firm but rarely choppy. There are several 2005 content updates, including standard ABS and stability control on all models, revisions to the optional all-wheel-drive system, 16-inch alloy wheels, and exterior styling tweaks. This guilt-free SUV with excellent build quality delivers solid utility, lots of driving fun, and passenger-car fuel economy.
Snapped during testing in Europe, this all-but-undisguised prototype provides a detailed look at the next generation of Honda’s small ute, one of the segment’s bestsellers since its 2002 introduction. In addition to all-new sheetmetal, exterior updates include projector-beam headlamps, a first for this vehicle.
The redesigned CR-V will share its underpinnings with the ’07 Acura RDX, an update that includes a stiffer structure and a one-inch wheelbase stretch, to 104 inches. Although length is likely to remain about the same, at just under 182 inches, width should expand by almost three inches from the current 70.2. The CR-V will not share the new 240-hp, 2.3-liter four-cylinder turbo that’s exclusive to the RDX, but power is expected to go up substantially over the 156 horsepower generated by the current 2.4-liter four. We expect that new number to be around 200 horsepower.
The 2007 CR-V is due in Honda showrooms this fall.
