While the Toyota Prius 2012 Plug-in Hybrid is not available at your local Toyota dealers yet, the company has been allowing government agencies, universities, and some car writers around the country to test drive the approximately 160 vehicles they have equipped with lithium-ion batteries for their demonstration program.

The program allows them to gather feedback that will be used to further improve the plug-in technology. The company also hopes the demo models will spur development of public access charging stations available in such technically-advanced cities as Boulder, Colorado and even Austin, Texas. Starting with tests in Boulder in the fall of 2009 and spreading to include parts of California, NY, New Jersey, Washington D.C., Portland, Oregon, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Texas and other areas, the dashboard data from these test vehicles to help consumers understand how the plug-in hybrid vehicles are being used.

The Prius Plug-in Hybrid is basically built just like the other Prius models, a mid-size box that seats five but with a much heavier lithium-ion battery pack that can be charged in three hours on a 110-volt outlet, or in half that time using a 220 volt outlet. The charge will get you 13 miles, then the car reverts back to hybrid or…

This installation manual shows an example of an installation on a Toyota Tacoma; however, the installation may vary for your vehicle, so it may be necessary to consult the Toyota service manual for specific instructions for your year model.

Tools Needed: 10mm nut driver or socket, #1 Phillips screwdriver, and Trim Removal Tools (Optional) Be advised: These instructions may not include specifics for all vehicle configurations.
1. Set Parking brake and adjust steering wheel to various settings to facilitate removing the Instrument panel.
2. Partially remove the driver’s side kick panel.
a. Using your hands, gently pull straight back on the kick panel. There are 2 release clips; one is shown below. The other clip is directly below the one shown.

3. Remove the coin tray.
a. There are 4 clips that hold the tray in place. Gently pull straight out from the dash to remove the tray
4. Remove the driver’s side, lower instrument panel.
a. Using a 10mm socket, remove the two bolts shown in the following photos.
b. It’s not necessary, but it makes room to pull the door seal out and away from the instrument panel. This allows room to get your fingers or trim removal tool behind the panels.
c. Starting on the lower left-hand side, gently separate the lower instrument panel by pulling straight out from the dash.
i. When it’s completely separated, lower it to the floorboard.
d. Remove the Instrument Panel bezel.
i. Using a #1 Phillips screwdriver, remove the screws shown in the photo below. Note: make sure that good contact between the screwdriver and screw is made to ensure that the head is not stripped.
ii. It is a good idea to place some thick card-stock or paper around the top of the steering column to prevent scratching.
iii. Starting on the left-hand side, gently separate the upper Instrument Panel Bezel.
1. Rotate it up and to the left and let it hang.
e. Remove the Instrument Panel Cluster
i. Using a 10mm socket, remove the (4) retaining screws.
ii. Disconnect the IPC connector from the cluster.
Note: To prevent breaking the connectors, DO NOT rock the connector back and forth. Squeeze the release and pull straight up.
1. Using your index finger, you will be able to feel the locking tab on the back of the connector. Press-in on the tab and remove the connector
f. Using the supplied cable, connect the small black connector (C3) to the VSS inline module.

5. Connect (C2) of the supplied cable to (P2) on the green interface board.
6. Connect the vehicle’s IPC connector to (P1) of the green interface circuit board.
7. Carefully stow away the inline module and the green interface board.
a. Both pieces can be tied to a brace, cable or support, using tie wraps.

b. Connect the other end, marked (C1), of the supplied cable to the Instrument Panel Cluster.
8. Reverse the process of this document to properly re-install the Instrument Panel components.

Below is the procedure, which you must follow in order to program new keys. We give an example for programming 2 keys: 1. Press the button “Program Keys”. 2. Insert the first valid key into the ignition and turn the ignition On for at least 3 seconds but no longer than 15 seconds.
Turn the ignition Off and remove the first key. 3. Insert the second valid key and switch the ignition On within 15 seconds. After ten seconds a chime will sound and the Theft Alarm Light will begin to flash.

Turn the ignition Off and remove the second key. 3. Insert a blank Sentry Key into the ignition and switch the ignition On within 60 seconds. After 10 seconds a single chime will sound. The Theft Alarm Light will stop flashing, and turn On for 3 seconds; then turn Off. The new Sentry Key has been programmed. The Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter will also be programmed during this procedure. Repeat this process to program up to a total of 8 keys.

Erasing Keys If a programmed key is lost, you need to erase the available keys from the systems memory. This will prevent the lost key from starting the Toyota Lexus vehicle. All of the remaining keys must then be reprogrammed. By using this special function it is possible to calculate odometer values, display PIN codes, etc.. This application needs the EEPROM dump from the corresponding control unit. After the dump is loaded, some modifications will be made and you need to store the resulting dump as a new file, which you can program with a special programmer into the device that the dump is from. The dump tool receives as input a dump file from the corresponding unit (input dump is loaded with the
“Load dump” button). The dump file can be read either via OBDII but also with a programmer (especially for units where reading via OBDII is not possible).

As output the dump tool displays some data extracted from the input file and/or makes some modifications to the input data. If modifications were made (for some sub-functions there are no modifications made, only data are visualized) the user has to write the modified dump to the desired file (with the “Save dump” button), and then this modified dump should be saved back to the device via OBDII or with a programmer. If data are read/written with a programmer the user must make sure that the proper byte order is used. Because most of the programmers are reading the data on 16bit words, the byte order in the dump depends on the used programmer – some programmers produce dumps starting with the least significant byte, and some produce dumps starting with the most significant byte. This means that for the same unit two different programmers can produce different dumps. For that purpose a button “Swap bytes” is provided. This buttons changes alternatively the byte order into the dump. So, if after loading the dump file into the dump tool data cannot be extracted or modified, please try to swap the bytes to get a correct result.

Lexus completely redesigned the sus pension system in this model and added all the technology imaginable with it. These technological innova tions within the cabin are intuitive as well as accessible. A voice command system offers even more capability than the already advanced standard voice recogni tion system, allowing you to control many features using normal, every day speech.

The remote touch de vice is ergonomically designed with a fingertip toggle pad and snap-to technology that lets you easily move through logical menus of the RX’s features. Located centrally for your control and convenience, buttons on either side allow both the driver and front passenger to make selections. Of all the things most intriguing for me was the way designers dealt with the contour, angle, and surface of the interior. Since we are all dif ferent shapes and sizes, Lexus has provided features like easily adjust able heated and ventilated front seats and front-seat cushions that can be extended for additional leg support. Three memory buttons will return the seat, steering wheel and side rors to the programmed specifica tions. All this comfort is surrounded by power locks and windows and genuine leather trim.

The Lexus RX is not only driver friendly but passenger-friendly as well. Should your rear passenger have decidedly different tastes in en- tertainment, a dual-screen rear-seat entertainment system enables two separate video sources to be watched at the same time. With seven-inch LCD screens conveniently located be hind the front headrests, both sys tems are controlled with a single re mote, features wireless headphones, and can be used as a DVD player, an audio player, or a game console. Dur ing a long vacation trip last week not once did the grandchildren ask, “Are we there yet?” There is a large cargo area because of the double-wishbone suspension, but the design actually makes for even more usable cargo space.

The rear seats fold effortlessly with re mote levers on either side of the rear door opening. And with a split-cargo cover design, covered items are easily within reach when the power rear door is raised.

The Auris hybrid features a high voltage Hybrid Vehicle (HV) battery pack that contains sealed Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) battery modules. HV Battery Pack:
• The HV battery pack is enclosed in a metal case and is rigidly mounted to the cargo area floor pan cross member behind the rear seat. The metal case is isolated from high voltage and concealed by carpet in the cabin area.
• The HV battery pack consists of 28 low voltage (7.2 Volt) NiMH battery modules connected in series to produce approximately 201.6 Volts. Each NiMH battery module is non-spillable and in a sealed case.
• The electrolyte used in the NiMH battery module is an alkaline mixture of potassium and sodium hydroxide. The electrolyte is absorbed into the battery cell plates and will not normally leak, even in a collision.

Hybrid Vehicle (HV) Battery Pack and Auxiliary Battery, HV Battery Pack Recycling. The HV battery pack is recyclable. Contact either your Toyota Distributor as mentioned on HV battery Caution Label (see page 30) or the nearest Toyota dealer. Auxiliary Battery • The Auris hybrid also contains a lead-acid 12 Volt battery. This 12 Volt auxiliary battery powers the vehicle electrical system similar to a conventional vehicle. As with other conventional vehicles, the auxiliary battery is grounded to the metal chassis of the vehicle. • The auxiliary battery is located in the cargo area. It is concealed by a fabric cover on the passenger side in the rear quarter panel well.

High Voltage Safety. The HV battery pack powers the high voltage electrical system with DC electricity. Positive and negative orange colored high voltage power cables are routed from the battery pack, under the vehicle floor pan, to the inverter/converter. The inverter/converter contains a circuit that boosts the HV battery voltage from 201.6 to 650 Volts DC. The inverter/converter creates 3-phase AC to power the motors. Power cables are routed from the inverter/converter to each high voltage motor (electric motor, electric generator, and A/C compressor). The following systems are intended to help keep occupants in the vehicle and emergency responders safe from high voltage electricity…
