Mercedes-Benz, with additional input from the German tuning company Brabus, has introduced the ‘King Kong’ of off-roaders at this month’s Dubai Motor Show. It’s designed to be the most outrageous car of its type in the world, with the ability to discover the most inaccessible parts of the globe.

The new Mercedes-Benz Unimog Black Edition is a combination of a day-to-day, recreational and utility vehicle based on the Unimog U 500.
Cooperation with Brabus the tuning company in Bottrop has created a recreational vehicle for individualists, with a striking appearance which sets it apart from other on-road or off-road vehicles. The high, truck-like seating position provides the driver with excellent all-round visibility. Thanks to power steering and compact dimensions, the Mercedes-Benz Unimog U 500 Black Edition is as manoeuvrable as a medium-sized passenger car.

Both the exterior and interior of the exclusive Unimog Black Edition have been completely revised. Its silhouette is characterised by both a platform with integral side panels, and a newly designed bumper while the roll-over bar of polished stainless steel and upswept chrome exhaust pipes accentuate the sporty appearance.

The vehicle interior has been customised by Brabus and many features in carbon-fibre. The roof and the A/B-pillars are lined in Alcantara leather, while the sports-style seats are upholstered in the finest mastic leather and the footwells are carpeted in soft velour. The colour scheme is deep black, in line with the model name. With a black leather steering wheel and aluminium pedals, the driver of the Unimog Black Edition should have the vehicle firmly under control. Technical highlights include the COMAND system from the S-Class, with a 6.5″ screen, DVD navigation, CD changer and a specially developed compass function. A comfortable interior atmosphere is ensured by two separately controlled air conditioning systems, tinted glass all-round and a first-class sound system.

CLUTCH HUB REMOVAL Remove clutch retaining ring or nut. Use a spanner wrench to prevent the hub plate from turning. 2. Attach the tool to the end plate by threading the outer nut of the tool into the center hole of the clutch end plate. 3. Tighten the inner tool arbor against the end of the compressor. Tech Tip: Proper air gap between the clutch pulley and hub armature is critical to compressor overall performance. Failure to maintain the proper spacing, as indicated in the mfgrs. specifications can lead to problems such as clutch burning or slippage. shaft to lift the plate.

CLUTCH HUB INSTALLATION 1. Position the shaft key in place. 2. Slide the clutch hub onto the shaft of the compressor. Be careful not to damage the components by using excess force. 3. Thread the inner part of the tool onto the shaft. Tighten the outer nut of the tool to push the shaft key in. 4. Set the air gap. Add or remove shims to obtain the mfg. specifications. Always set at the min. number and measure at multiple points around the circumference. 5. Reinstall the retaining ring or nut. 6. Check oil level and rotate the hub with the nose of the compressor down to help lubricate. You can checking compressor ratios is an excellent way to check system performance and possible failures. Run the vehicle at 1500 RPM and record both gauge readings then add 15PSI to your reading.

R-12 acceptable ratios are between 5 to 1and 6 to 1. R-134a acceptable ratios are between 6 to 1 and 7 to 1 If a systems exceeds these ratios the compressor may fail to high internal pressure on the pistons and swash plates. Possible causes of high ratios are refrigerant overcharges and air in the system. Recover /recharge, vacuum, and identify source of excess air. (Use refrigerant identifier to check equipment, 1. Hub/armature and rotor/pulley drive faces have oil or grease on them. a. Look for shaft seal leak and replace clutch b. Compressor leaking through the bolt. Repair leak source. 2. Check for missing or improperly installed snap ring. Repair or replace the clutch.

Field coil snap ring is wrong size. Measure thickness and refer to parts manual for correct size. Repair or replace clutch if damaged. Always check anti-rotation pin damage. Retaining ring should be facing away from the compressor, fully seated in groove, lug of ring should not be over the anti-rotation pin, and field ring tight against the compressor. 4. Check to ensure clutch components are matched correctly. The straight coil to straight rotor/ pulley and stepped coil to stepped rotor/pulley. Repair or replace if they don’t match. REPLACE IN PAIRS. Look for high pressures. Remember too much oil will cause slugging and low oil causes binding. Make sure you don’t have…

Briefly, this engine has problems. With distressing frequency these engines show significant, grossly premature wear, requiring expensive rebuilding. Symptoms are excessive oil consumption, mechanical noise, smoke, and a throbbing idle. Diagnostic procedures usually reveal that one or more cylinders have compression that is below specification, with excessive variation in the compression among all cylinders. Mechanical teardown frequently reveals cylinders that are out of round and connecting rods that are bent.

Catastrophic engine failure has occurred quite often. These problems are clearly due to a design defect that Mercedes Benz refuses to acknowledge. These problems can not be prevented with any sort of routine maintenance, nor can they be forestalled with changes in driving behavior. In essence, the engine self-destructs during normal operation. Symptoms have appeared as early as 50,000 miles. Due to the expense of individual repairs, Mercedes honors warranty repairs only after considerable pressure is applied. Out-of-warranty claims are summarily rejected.

THE ENGINE The problem engine is a 3,449 cubic centimeter displacement in-line 6-cylinder turbo-charged diesel engine. Diesel engines were first used in the W-116 300SDL S-Class beginning in 1978, continuing through 1980. That engine was a 3 liter 5 cylinder turbodiesel, model 617. The W-126 S-Class debuted in 1981 with that same engine, which was changed to a 3.0 litre 6 cylinder (the 603.96x) in 1986-87. This same 3.0 liter engine was also used in the W-124 300D and 300TD in model year 1987. These engines are NOT the problem. That engine block and head, however, were the starting point for the 3.5 liter version. For comparison purposes it will be helpful to know how many of these 6 cylinder 3.0 liter versions were in use……

The 3.0 liter 6-cylinder 603.96x engine was an extremely reliable engine during its production
run. The problem-plagued 3.5 liter 603.97x engine is based on the 3.0 liter version and uses essentially the same head and the same block. What went wrong? For whatever reason, Mercedes decided that beginning in model year 1990 the S-Class needed a turbo-diesel engine with greater displacement than the 3.0 liter version that had been used in 1986-1987. Rather than develop a new engine, a decision was made to increase the displacement of the existing engine. Three factors determine displacement: number of cylinders, bore, and stroke. Since
the 603 block already had 6 cylinders, (the 617 had 5) that left an increase in bore and /or stroke as the only way to increase displacement.

Parrot’s unique Bluetooth Car Kits give customers the convenience of hands-free phone use in their cars, vans, pickups, and SUVs. Use of a hands-free phone helps to minimize driving distractions and optimize driver safety by permitting drivers’ hands to stay on the wheel and eyes to remain focused on the road. In fact, many states and cities have recently enacted laws and ordinances that ban the use of hand-held phones while driving. However, whether or not a customer can take full advantage of Parrot’s hands-free technology depends in large part on each individual dealer – and how well the Car Kit is installed, as well as how well dealers, installers, and their associates can guide your customer through its proper use. This Parrot Installation Guide is designed for use by all Parrot product dealers and installers. The document’s primary focus is on the needs of the independent installing retailer and methods for ensuring customer satisfaction.

It should be read thoroughly by everyone in a dealership who deals directly or indirectly with customers to ensure that all best practices are followed. Parrot’s recommended best practices for hardware installation and training benefit both the installer and customer by keeping processes as smooth and efficient as possible. By adhering to the guidelines in this Manual, Parrot dealers increase their installation efficiency while earning customer loyalty and generating repeat business from satisfied customers. This Manual can also serve as a resource for Customer Relationship Management, helping employees understand customer interface techniques to use before and after the sale. By performing proper installation and offering proper customer service, the customer’s confidence and trust can be gained and a potentially long-term business relationship can be built. These practices are useful in generating customer referrals and are generally successful in creating return visits for all their future mobile electronics needs.

2. Overview
The term “installation” can sometimes refer to the process of connecting the appropriate wires between the car audio system and the Parrot Car Kit, mounting the display or control unit, and firing up the system to make sure it works. But many retailers understand that “installation” is much more than this – they see it as having three phases, all of which play an important part in ensuring customer satisfaction:

Pre-installation: This phase involves everything that happens between the time the customer enters the store and when the technician begins installing the Parrot Car Kit. For instance, during this time the dealer will help customers determine which Parrot product is best for their needs and where they might like the LCD located on the instrument panel. Dealers should take the time to describe the overall installation process and answer questions. Many experienced dealers are integrating Parrot products into their existing “soundwall” displays or using Parrot countertop displays to demonstrate the functionality of the Car Kit that the customer has chosen; these demo models provide the customer with instant access to what Kits are capable of. At a minimum, a set of ISO power and speaker adapters for pre-installation bench testing is recommended. However dealers choose to facilitate customer demonstrations, a pre-installation demo of the selected Car Kit with the customer’s phone prevents the risk of missing expectations after the kit is installed.

Installation: As outlined below, Parrot Car Kits can be installed in several different ways depending on the availability of harness adapters and the time constraints of the customer. Near the end of installation, when all power and electrical signals are properly connected, the installer should perform a basic test of the system. The basic test is described in detail in Section 3 and verifies proper power, ground, mute, and speaker connections. The microphone is difficult to test at this point and a visual verification of the physical connection is recommended.

Post-installation: Once the unit has been installed, dealers should take the time to walk their customers through basic operations, including pairing the mobile phone with the Car Kit, synchronizing the phone book, and making and taking calls. Dealers should also clearly communicate their ability to upgrade the system if customers have problems with their next phone purchase. Most importantly, dealers should ask if customers are totally satisfied with their experience and immediately address any open questions or issues. Finally, dealers should politely offer customers additional brochures and/or business cards for referrals. If customers are really satisfied with their overall experience, they will respond accordingly.

Use Harness Adapters When Possible
Parrot recommends using a Parrot plug-and-play harness adapter wherever possible. This approach minimizes risk and maximizes efficiency. A Parrot plug-and-play adapter also allows the customer to easily change or upgrade units. This approach can potentially increase chances of repeat business by helping to ensure the customer is fully satisfied with the installation process. Currently, many non-amplified systems can use plug-and-play harness adapters available from Metra under the BT-xxxx part numbers. Plug-and-play harness kits for amplified systems will eventually be supported. For amplified systems, the best solution available varies depending upon make and model. If systems have amplifiers in the front door circuit, external speakers make for the best workaround.
