Except for a couple niche hybrids, Japan’s premier luxury automaker hasn’t done anything interesting since they introduced the current IS sedan almost six years ago. That’s a long time in the auto industry, especially in the luxury segment, so maybe Toyota released the LFA more to inspire their Lexus employees than anything else. My two cents is that’s why the Lexus LFA is here; and after driving it, I’m even more sure. It’s an amazing vehicle that can’t help but inspire anyone who goes anywhere near it.

Like many of you, I’d seen the LFA countless times before. I’d seen the commercial with the LFA and the champagne glasses. I had read the articles in AutoWeek and Car and Driver. I knew this car. Still, while I could spot its lines online from six feet, the LFA was Gwyneth Paltrow
to me: I knew I was supposed to be turned on, but I wasn’t. At all. Then I sat down in its supportive seats, fired up the 552 HP V10 en-
gine, and headed out onto Infineon raceway in Sonoma, CA. And everything changed. Completely. I’d already taken a bunch of laps in the fast V8 Lexus IS-F sedan, but this was different. Every turn arrived oh-no-it’s-here NOW, those corners were taken much faster than I thought they could be, and every straight scared me.

Loud and surprisingly raw, the LFA was a true supercar in that it had capability that I could only dream of reaching, yet I found myself pushing through my previous psychological limits over and over again just to experience the rush. Driving this unusual Lexus at the track was brutally good, intoxicating and, yes—inspiring. Frankly, I suspect Lexus will struggle to sell all 500 LFAs—they’re priced higher than the Ferrari 458 Italia and Lamborghini Gallardo, after all. But if the LFA inspires Lexus engineers and designers to create cool vehicles to compete with the likes of the Audi A5, Mercedes CLS, and Porsche Panamera, it will have been worth the cost. As a Lexus fan, I hope that happens.

Turn the ignition Off and remove the second key. 3. Insert a blank Sentry Key into the ignition and switch the ignition On within 60 seconds. After 10 seconds a single chime will sound. The Theft Alarm Light will stop flashing, and turn On for 3 seconds; then turn Off. The new Sentry Key has been programmed. The Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter will also be programmed during this procedure. Repeat this process to program up to a total of 8 keys.

Erasing Keys If a programmed key is lost, you need to erase the available keys from the systems memory. This will prevent the lost key from starting the Toyota Lexus vehicle. All of the remaining keys must then be reprogrammed. By using this special function it is possible to calculate odometer values, display PIN codes, etc.. This application needs the EEPROM dump from the corresponding control unit. After the dump is loaded, some modifications will be made and you need to store the resulting dump as a new file, which you can program with a special programmer into the device that the dump is from. The dump tool receives as input a dump file from the corresponding unit (input dump is loaded with the
“Load dump” button). The dump file can be read either via OBDII but also with a programmer (especially for units where reading via OBDII is not possible).

As output the dump tool displays some data extracted from the input file and/or makes some modifications to the input data. If modifications were made (for some sub-functions there are no modifications made, only data are visualized) the user has to write the modified dump to the desired file (with the “Save dump” button), and then this modified dump should be saved back to the device via OBDII or with a programmer. If data are read/written with a programmer the user must make sure that the proper byte order is used. Because most of the programmers are reading the data on 16bit words, the byte order in the dump depends on the used programmer – some programmers produce dumps starting with the least significant byte, and some produce dumps starting with the most significant byte. This means that for the same unit two different programmers can produce different dumps. For that purpose a button “Swap bytes” is provided. This buttons changes alternatively the byte order into the dump. So, if after loading the dump file into the dump tool data cannot be extracted or modified, please try to swap the bytes to get a correct result.

• The transmission will feel different. The Lexus RX uses an Electronically-controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (ECVT). The transmission does not shift with fixed gear ratios like a conventional transmission, so it delivers power efficiently and smoothly. The “B” gear position is for engine braking.

• The brakes may feel different. The RX 400h has a regenerative braking system which works in conjunction with its conventional hydraulic braking system. As a result, the brakes may feel different from a conventional vehicle.

• The engine will turn off and on while you drive. The engine will automatically turn on and off as needed. At medium or high speeds, it is normal for the engine to be on most of the time. At low speeds or when stopped, the engine may or may not be on, depending on the need.

• You will notice different sounds while driving. The engine sound will be more steady than a conventional vehicle when accelerating due to the smooth operation of the ECVT. It is also normal for the new technology of the Lexus Hybrid Drivesystem to make a “whirring” sound while driving.

B. Floor Mat Inspection Instructions and Application Information
• Before placing a floor mat in a vehicle be familiar with the procedure outlined below.
o Identify the correct driver’s floor mat for the specific vehicle application.
o Correctly install the driver’s floor mat.
• Regularly verify the correct floor mat is securely installed in the appropriate model using the retaining hooks (clips).
NOTE: Use the Application Information Chart provided or the Accessory Parts Catalog to verify mat-to-vehicle application.
1. Make sure the AWFM is properly secured by the retaining hooks (clips). Confirm that the retaining hooks (clips) are secured into the grommet holes in the vehicle’s floor (carpet). Warning: Do not stack the floor mats in any vehicle. The retaining hooks (clips) are designed to accommodate only one floor mat at a time.
2. Check the following pedal operation (fully depress the pedal) to assure the floor mat does not interfere with it. Make sure the vehicle is turned off and in the “Park” position when testing:

Once loaded, set the parking brake and secure the vehicle onto the carrier using wheel strap tie downs. AAA recommends the use of wheel strap tie-downs around each wheel because the Lexus GX460 can be equipped with air suspension. If wheel strap tie downs are not available, the air suspension needs to be turned off before securing the vehicle by the body or frame. Consult the air suspension shut off information in the jacking section of this service guide (page 12).

SHIFTER LOCK OVER-RIDE: If there is a problem with the shifter or if the ignition key is not available, the transmission can be shifted out of the park position. This is accomplished by lifting out the small cover to the left of the shifter “Park (P)” indicator and depressing the button below the cover to allow the shifter to be moved out of the Park position (See Figures 6 and 7).

WHEEL-LIFT TOWING PROCEDURE: If a wheel-lift is used, the procedures shown below must be used with no exceptions. CAUTION: The GX460 is a Full Time Four-Wheel Drive vehicle. It is essential that no attempt be made to move these vehicles with only two wheels lifted. To tow GX460 with a wheel-lift and dolly, observe the following: x Secure the one set of wheels firmly to the wheel-lift and the other set of wheels firmly to the dolly. x After loading the GX460 onto the dolly and wheel-lift, place the transmission selector in Park and set the parking brake. x Use a steering wheel securing device to prevent possible excessive load on the steering column lock. x Attach safety chains and tow lights to the vehicle. x Ensure that the ignition switch is turned OFF to prevent unnecessary battery drain.

JACKING: The jack supplied with the GX460 is located in the rear cargo area behind a removable trim panel on the driver’s side (See Figure 10) . The approved lifting locations are on the frame section to the rear of the front wheels or under the rear axle where the spring attaches to the axle (See Figure 11).

The jack handle and other tire changing tools are in a tool kit located on the rear cargo door (See Figure 12). Figure 12 Place the jack in its proper location. Ensure that the air suspension is shut off prior to jacking the vehicle. The air suspension switch is located to the passenger side of the transmission shifter (See Figure 13). To lock the air suspension, press the ENGINE START STOP button so that the dash lights are on. Press the air suspension off button. The readout in the dash should indicate that the air suspension is off, if it does not, try starting the engine and pressing the air suspension off button. Once the vehicle reaches a speed of 18 MPH, the system turns itself back on. Observe all standard jacking precautions and ensure that the vehicle is on firm, level ground. As the jack comes in contact with the vehicle body, ensure that it is contacting the correct location on the vehicle.

Continue lifting to raise the vehicle high enough to change the tire. TIRE SERVICE: The Lexus GX460 is equipped with a full size spare tire mounted on an alloy rim which is stored under the vehicle and is held in place by a winch and cable assembly. Access to the crank assembly to lower the spare tire is inside the rear cargo door (See Figure 14). Insert the jack handle into the lowering socket and turn it counter clockwise to lower the spare tire (See Figure 16). Use caution when lowering the spare tire to prevent damage to the bumper surface when operating the jack handle. Follow normal tire changing procedures which include securing the vehicle by setting the parking brake and chocking the wheel diagonal from the flat tire. Remove the wheel cover then loosen all the wheel nuts a couple of turns before lifting the vehicle. Lift the vehicle only enough to remove and install the tire. Complete the removal of the lug nuts. When removing the deflated road wheel, ensure that care is taken not to damage the surface of the wheel.
