The Jaguar XJS has always been a desirable car for anyone wanting a big, comfortable GT to waft along in luxury. That’s fine if someone else is paying the fuel bills, but when this Jaguar left the production line its 5.3-litre V12 engine would have been returning about 15mpg – single figures were possible if it was driven enthusiastically. David Frost has owned Jaguars most of his life, including several E-types and S-types. His first was a 3.8 Mk2 manual overdrive that he bought when he was 26. After owning an XJS coupé, David fancied a drophead. He spotted this 1992 convertible on eBay and was intrigued to see it had a diesel engine conversion.

BMW diesel engine The Vauxhall Omega used a BMW 2.5-litre straight-six. Fitted to the XJS, it offers comparable acceleration but double the fuel economy of the petrol V12 it replaced. New engine mounts and subframe changes were required to fit it. Turbo-diesel engine and wanted a BMW 3.0-litre – the problem was finding one. Eventually I found a back-end-damaged low-mileage Vauxhall omega with a 2.5 diesel engine, which I bought for £650 because the engine was immaculate. The car was a Category B so the only way they’d sell it was to cut the car in half to prevent it returning to the road; they also gave me the fuel lines and fuel tank. “I stripped the wiring loom off the car and got the engine running with the loom completely isolated and detached from the donor car – all unnecessary dead lines and plugs were removed. Key parts such as the timed live wire feed to the electric fuel pump were kept in place, as were all feeds to the ECU.

Could you do it yourself? There’s no reason why not. The Jaguar has a huge engine bay and any number of engines could be fitted. Careful attention needs to be paid to the height of a straight-six engine, though, because the modifications needed to the front subframe have made the car very low to the ground at the front. You’ll also need a fair amount of room and strong lifting gear to remove the heavy V12 engine. The braking system meant that in the end I had to manufacture an add-on plate that houses the clutch pedal, then drill and tap threads for the clutch cylinder.”

Doctor’s orders “The best part of the conversion was linking up the ECU to the Jaguar rev counter,” remembers Guzanfar. “I had to buy an oscilloscope to find the rev counter wire, which gave off a square waveform – the wave compresses when the revs increase so I knew I had the correct one. I then wired a connection to the rev meter and the rev counter worked perfectly. That was the most satisfying part of the project. “The original Jaguar fuel tank was retained. There were four fuel lines to the V12 engine. The feeding line was easy to find after wiring the pump. I used one of the lines for a return pipe. Two of the lines are now a blind ending with a filter to prevent a vacuum in the tank as the fuel level falls. I’m not sure if this would ever have been a real problem but I did it just to be on the safe side.” The car’s fuel filler has also been enlarged to allow for the larger nozzles on diesel fuel pumps.

as fitted to a series iii e-type, the stock 5.3-liter V-12 is only 86 pounds heavier than its 4.2-liter straight-six predecessor, and uses four Zenith-stromberg 175 cd 2se carburetors. the engine in the Beast is a highly modified 7.3-liter unit that uses an 84mm Jaguar racing forged crankshaft, 96mm cosworth pistons, carrillo connecting rods and 1.8-inch inlet/1.4-inch exhaust valves with .501 lift. with an 11.6:1 compression ratio and six 44mm weber idf carburetors, it makes 600hp and 578-lbs.ft. of torque.

the Beast is over the top, but there are a lot of cost-effective ways to modify the series iii V-12 for more power,” stew says. “with the short stroke, the 5.3-liter is a durable engine that goes and goes. But instead of trying to get more power from a 5.3, it’s easy to increase the cubic inches without giving away low-speed driveability. you can combine the longer crank of the late 6.0-liter engine with 6mm overbore pistons and liners and a mild, streetable cam, and you’ll have a 6.8-liter making between 350 and 375hp, which is pretty exciting in a 3,200-pound car.
the stromberg carburetors can be made to work very well, and two-inch sus are a mid-level upgrade before webers.

“e-types are notorious for overheating, and i insist on cooling upgrades on every car i work on, including a ron davis aluminum radiator, electric cooling fans, a 165-degree thermostat and an airpax commercial-level fan switch, which fits in a special housing that i developed. the weak stock ignition system is cured with sng Barratt’s opus ignition replacement he upgrade.”

Battery Care. Currently all vehicles received into storage are fitted with electronic battery isolators / transit relay except Defender Models (Please refer to table below). No actions other than key out disciplines are required to vehicles received in to storage in respect of battery care. The Land Rover Defender range of vehicles however will require battery disconnection.

Whenever Defender Models are parked for extended periods (14 days or over), batteries should be disconnected since battery isolator is not fitted. The correct tools must always be used. Only trained personnel should be authorised to undertake this activity.

Defender battery reconnections should be to correct Torque levels. Voltage checks should be undertaken before the battery is reconnected. Once Defender battery reconnected, key fob will need to be re synced by pressing the unlock button 3 rimes – the indicators will flash as per a normal unlock when the process is complete. The radio code will also be required to be inputted again. If defender is in storage for more than 90 days, after battery disconnection, vehicle is to be reconnected and run to engine is warm and voltage checked.

Replacement of batteries.
Ensure that correct battery type is requested. Confirm type is correct on receipt of a battery from store. For removal purposes, first disconnect the negative, then the positive terminal of the battery. For installation / reconnection, apply the reverse sequence, i.e. first the positive terminal, then the negative terminal. Terminals should be tightened to factory torque settings.

A lifting device is recommended to assist battery removal and operative safety in the event of multiple changes being required. Operative safety is a primary consideration at all times. When storing batteries it is essential that they comply with Health and Safety requirements as stipulated by your Health and Safety Manager. Scrap batteries must be returned to plant MP&L for the safe and controlled disposal in line with environmental guidelines.

6.6 Loose Item checks.
The following items should be checked at each and every receipt or contract transfer, irrespective of location. They form a core part of any survey checks undertaken. Vehicles should be checked (subject to market standard items) and can include the following items: -

Two sets of keys / infrared sensors
Spare wheel and tools
ICE /Sat Nav present
Vehicle protection in place

Items in secure areas /sealed / under bonnet or where removal of seats would be needed to be made to confirm their presence and are specifically excluded in respect of TRANSIT checks. If broken seals are noted then this condition should be recorded to history record, VLDR or tracking system and reported to JLR.

Looking for something sleek and sporty? Solid and stately? Today’s breed of luxury autos offers everyone from performance aficionados to demanding seekers of mobile opulence a dizzying spectrum of premium metal. Learn about the leading and lesser known luxury car makers who elevate motoring to a fine art with Elite Traveler’s guide to the finest automobiles on the planet.

Aston Martin With an astounding racing heritage, a design history that has always stressed innovation while retaining a signature elegance (and, of course, the undying loyalty of a certain British secret agent), more than any other brand, Aston Martin evokes a unique balance of performance and styling in the world of sport and grand touring luxury cars. Founded in 1913, under the post-war leadership of Sir David Brown (the “DB” in the model names), the company established a solid racing reputation with a series of sporty offerings capped by the iconic DB5 of James Bond fame in 1963. Today, from its state-of-the-art facility in Gaydon in Warwickshire, the company, recently taken under private ownership after a stint as part of Ford’s PAG (Performace Auto Group), produces cars with a distinct blend of thrilling performance and understated but aggressive styling: “Like a tough guy in a dinner jacket,” is how Director of Design Marek Reichman explained it to me once, and that says it all.

Bugatti The golden era of luxury automaker Bugatti dates back to the 1920s and 1930s, when designer Ettore Bugatti produced coach-built luxury saloons like the Royale as well as legendary racers like the Type 59 Grand Prix for a select group of European elite from his workshops in Molsheim, France. Today, under the auspices of parent company Volkswagen AG, a new era for the company begins with the introduction of the Veyron 16.4, probably the most exacting, innovative and envelopepushing production car available (at a cool $1.5 million). Mining Bugatti’s uncompromising heritage of producing exclusive automobiles that are as much art as engineering, the Veyron’s development essentially started by throwing out the established car-making rulebook and focusing purely on innovation and “out-of-the-box” engineering to deliver a singularly masterful vehicle that both defines a cutting-edge experience and is surprisingly accessible and easy to drive, thus easy to love.

FAST TIMES
As befits such a rare, exceptional and innovative vehicle, this Parmigiani bugatti type 370 timepiece, by haute horologiste Michel Parmigiani, was in
development nearly as long as the car itself and picks up on the company’s idea of pure innovation with a superbly unique and elegant approach to chronometry. About $200,000.

Audi Immaculate and passionate engineering and a constant devotion to innovation has taken this German luxury brand from a somewhat conservative, fine sedan starting point and placed it firmly in a leadership role in technological integration as well as racing. This point was driven home for me recently when I attended the 24 Hours of Le Mans and enjoyed hearing the almos calm, smooth-running, diesel-powered Audi R10s whip around the track in competition with (and oftentimes declare victory over) the chortling, standard-fuel entries from other performance car companies. That spirit of embracing unique technologies that succeed in reinforcing the brand’s luxury underpinnings is abundantly apparent across its whole line, from the directly Le Mans-inspired R8 sport coupe to its terrific entry-level Quattro models to its commitment to diesel engines to its partnership with audio leader Bang & Olufsen, which produces an exceptional optional stereo package for Audi’s top models

BMW When it comes to the performance/luxury formula of high-end motoring, more than any other large-scale manufacturer, BMW consistently delivers pure driving thrills across its entire line, from its muscular M program offerings to its marvelous 7 Series flagship to its zippy Z4 roadsters to its new “SAV” X6 crossovers to its universally praised 3 Series models. This thrill factor is particularly apropos since the Bayerische Motoren Werke AG company started life in 1913 as a motorcycle maker and still continues its tradition of exceptional two-wheel vehicle manufacturing. BMW’s M program (the “m” is for “motorsports”), in particular, draws from the German company’s heritage of racing successes to deliver unparalleled power, dynamics and handling to high-end buyers, constantly re-inventing what a road car can really do.

To be a Jaguar enthusiast is to be an undying romantic, I’ll admit to it. If you think back to the quintessentially British marque’s post-war era of classically beautiful and powerful cars (as well as its share of racing victories), like the stunning long-bonneted E-Type or the regal Mark II, and take a gander at the reinvented lightweight modern models painstakingly crafted by design head Ian Callum (one of the industry’s most skilled, and most intuitive), you can still feel that romance and passion. With a business history a bit more chaotic than its uncompromising heritage of design and performance, Jaguar now has a new, deep-pocketed home with international conglomerate Tata that promises a focused and attentive approach to fostering the legendary brand. Previous owner Ford’s attempts to open up the line to more entry-level buyers proved to be a misstep; Jaguar is simply a luxury brand, period. Advanced offerings like the company’s R program (with its throbbing supercharged engines) and stunning Vanden Plas interior package for the flagship XJ, help plant that luxury flag firmly within a line of gorgeous, sensual performance automobiles.

Lexus In the late 1980s Toyota challenged the reigning protocols of luxury car-making by audaciously suggesting that leveraging the expertise and efficiency of mass production could yield superb vehicles on par with, or even superior to, their existing counterparts. Lexus succeeded not only in changing the playing field forever, but also succeeded in astronomical sales and a rapid-fire marketing success that almost defies logic.
The rest, as they say, is history. Harnessing only the best-of-breed developments from the flurry of ideas and innovations that are endemic to the competitive large-scale automotive industry, Lexus has only gotten better and better at challenging those same precepts (the first true-luxury hybrid in the LS 600h sedan, the remarkably nimble IS-F sport coupe that evokes the “P” word in terms of performance and handling) and continuing to win over the hearts and minds of the luxury car buyer..

The Gray side of Koolmat must be installed up, so you can see it. The white, Glass weave side, must be down against the floorboard. If trimming the Koolmat is Required, the material can be trimmed using scissors or a razor blade. A sharp razor blade is more efficient than scissors. The Koolmat Components for the Jaguar Kit have been cut such that all mating components should be butted edge to edge or could have a slight overlap. This butting of the edges together is critical to prevent unwanted heat from entering the vehicle. To ensure the proper fit, all Koolmat components of the kit should be temporarily positioned in place before any silicone is used to secure the top pieces together. Re-adjust the position of the components as necessary to achieve the desired fit. (Make sure they fit on the floor) (Follow the procedure on the spray glue can you have purchased, sometimes these instructions will have you prepare the object three times instead of one time. This is very important so that the glue will stay in place.

It is better to start in the foot box area since it is harder to reach these spots. There are 18 pieces to this kit. Six of these pieces fit into the foot box area and need to be installed. Lay parts DTB-5, DFJF-4 and D6 on the Driver side floor of the vehicle. Align the outer edges of the Koolmat parts with the contours in the floorboards. Check to see if any adjustments need to be made, if so, cut or trim to fit, then lay in with glue. Now continue on to the next two pieces in front of these. Lay parts DMJF-2, DRF-3 and DRJF-1 on the Driver side floor of the vehicle. Align the outer edges of the Koolmat parts with the contours in the floorboards. Check to see if any adjust need to be made, if so, cut or trim to fit, then lay in with glue. Go to the passenger side. Lay parts in place on the passenger side, PJB-11, PFJF-10 and P-12. Align the outer edges just as you did on the driver side for it, trim if necessary and glue down. Now lay these pieces in place, PLF-8, PMJF-9 and finally PRJF-7. The center counsel side in front can be put into place DLJT-15 and PRJT-16 and finally lay in the center piece TFJ-15.

Adjust the center counsel pieces and fit into place TMJ-14 and TRJ-13. an extra tunnel top piece is included (see tunnel top) (no part number on it (18 piece). Once the pieces are in place you might need to lay a weight on any piece of material that is coming up. Koolmat is a silicone product so normal glues will not stick to the top gray side of it, nor will some tapes. A silicone-based tape may work. (Silicone application) After the material has dried over night take the silicone supplied in the kit and run a bead of silicone to seal the slits you created when you butted the two pieces of Koolmat together. This will prevent heat from entering from the frame area and keep cool air conditioning from leaking out of the same holes the heat is trying to get in. Glue will not stick to the gray silicone so you must use the tube we supplied with the kit. Questions on installation call: 877-566-5369 Toll Free (Scraps from the cut kit are included in this box.)
