If the four-wheel steering (4WS) control unit senses a failure in the system, the control unit switches to a fail-safe mode. In this mode, the control unit stores a trouble code or codes and illuminates the 4WS indicator light to inform the driver that a problem exists in the system. When this mode is entered, the 4WS control unit shuts off voltage to the rear steering unit and the rear wheels remain in the straight-ahead position.

When the 4WS control unit enters the fail-safe mode, a quick return of the rear wheels to the straight-ahead position would adversely affect steering under certain steering wheel and rear wheel positions. To prevent this action, the 4WS control unit energizes the damper relay when it enters the fail-safe mode. The rear steering actuator motor is spun by the steering shaft move-ment as this shaft is moved to the centered position by centering spring force. This action causes the motor armature to act as a voltage generator. The voltage generated by the armature is fed back through the damper relay to the motor armature. Under this condition, the motor rotation is slowed and the return spring slowly moves the rear steering shaft to the straight-ahead position. Without the action of the damper relay, the return spring would move the rear steering shaft quickly to the straight-ahead position.

The 4WS control unit actually contains two processing units that are referred to as the main and sub processing units. Each processing unit can store a maximum of ten trouble codes. If the trouble code diagnosis is performed with the engine running, the code display indicates whether the codes are stored in the main or sub processor.

This is a complicated engine swap requiring modifications to the chassis. If you have never performed an engine swap before, Hasport recommends that you have this swap performed by a competent shop. These instructions pertain ONLY to the ENGINE MOUNTING of a K-Series motor into Honda Accord 1994 – 1997 chassis. There are still many other parts that will be needed for proper operation. These parts are under development by Hasport and other companies.

Our kit will allow the mounting of certain K-series engines. These engines include the US Spec 2003 up Accord K24A4, Element K24A4, TSX K24A2 and Accord Euro K20A and K24A. A manual transmissions from the 03-up US market Accord, the Accord Euro and Acura TSX must also be used. The shift cables from these same models will need to be used. The kit will not work with Honda Civic or RSX K-series transmissions.

It is important to remember that engine swaps are not legal in all states or countries. It’s best to check local laws regarding engine swaps before proceeding. Removing the Engine: (Save all Bolts, You May Need One!)

1. Discharge R134A from AC system. Disconnect the hoses from the compressor. You will be removing the compressor with the engine. (Have a professional evacuate your system.)

2. Follow the Accord Service Manual instructions for removing the engine. Although the Service Manual shows a hoist being used and lifting the engine out of the top, this process can be simplified if you have access to a chassis lift. With the lift, you can use a flat surface at least 10 inches tall to support the engine from underneath while unbolting it from the vehicle. After it is unbolted use the lift to raise the chassis off the engine. One key point to pay attention to, is to remove the front suspension cross member and radius rods. It’s impossible to remove or install the new engine from the bottom with the crossmember and radius rods in place. It is a good idea to also remove the radiator and fans for extra working room.

Preparing the Engine Bay:

1. The major change to the engine bay is the installation of the new passenger side engine bracket from Hasport. It will replace the current right-hand transmission bracket in the car.

2. To make removing the existing transmission bracket easier, you will need these tools:
• Center punch
• 1/8 inch drill bit
• 3/8 inch or larger pilot point drill bit

3. Begin by center punching all the spot welds on the mount. This is so the drill bit won’t drift when drilling. Next use the 1/8 inch drill to drill a hole approximately 3/16 inches deep. This will prevent the pilot point drill from drifting. Don’t worry if you drill completely through the sheet metal.
Now use the pilot point drill to drill a hole as deep as the bracket sheetmetal is thick.

4. There will probably be a few small welds on the edges of the mount bracket too. Use a die grinder to remove them.

5. A chisel and hammer can now be used to finish removing the bracket. Once it is off use the die grinder with a sanding wheel to remove any excess material left over.

6. Place the Hasport engine bracket on the frame rail. To align it properly look down the top and line up the hole shown with the bolt-hole on the rail. Using one of the battery tray bolts bolt the bracket into place. Tighten the bolt finger tight. This will locate the Hasport engine bracket in the proper location. Outline the bracket and it’s holes where they come in contact with the frame rail. The paint around the markings should be removed before welding the bracket to the frame rail to insure a good weld. The holes are for rosette welds, which are stronger than simply welding along the edge of the bracket.

Malfunction Indicator Lamp. This indicator comes on for a few seconds when you turn the ignition switch to the ON (II) position. If it comes on at any other time, it indicates one of the engine’s emissions control systems may have a problem. For complete information, refer to the Civic Sedan owner’s manual.

This indicator will also come on if there is a problem in the fuel system. If this happens, have the vehicle checked by an authorized Honda Civic GX dealer as soon as possible. Drive moderately until the dealer has inspected the problem. Avoid full-throttle acceleration and driving at high speed. If you smell natural gas or hear a hissing sound, except when refueling, the fuel system may have a leak. Follow the instructions under If the Fuel System Has a Leak on page 28 of this supplement. This indicator comes on for a few seconds when you turn the ignition switch to the ON (II) position. It also comes on as a reminder that you must refuel soon. The approximate driving distance remaining when this indicator comes on is: City driving – 20-25 miles Highway driving – 25-30 miles

As the temperature of the outside air cools, the temperature inside the tank begins to drop, and the pressure inside the tank drops too. This means that when the outside air gets very cold [below 25°F (-4°C)], the pressure of the natural gas inside the tank goes down, and the fuel gauge may indicate that you have less fuel than what actually remains in the tank. Keep this in mind if the low fuel indicator comes on while you are driving in cold weather.

If this indicator starts blinking and the fuel level reading goes down to empty when the engine is running, it indicates a problem in the fuel system. Have the vehicle checked by an authorized Honda Civic GX dealer as soon as possible.

The manufacturers reserve the right to vary their specifications, including colours, with or without notice and at such times in such manner as they think fit. Major as well as minor changes may be involved. Every effort, however, is made to ensure the accuracy of the particulars contained in this brochure. This publication shall not constitute in any circumstances whatsoever an offer by the Company to any person.

All sales are made by the Distributor or Dealer concerned subject to and with the benefit of the standard Conditions of Sale and Warranty given by the Distributor or Dealer, copies of which may be obtained from him on request. This publicity material applies to the UK only Trade Descriptions Act (1968). Whilst efforts are made to ensure specification accuracy, brochures are prepared and printed several months in advance of distribution and consequently cannot always immediately reflect either changes in specification or in some isolated cases the provision of a particular feature. Customers are always advised to discuss specification details with the supplying Dealer especially if your model selection is dependent upon one of the features advertised. At Honda, belief is everything. It’s the belief that we have the power to change things. To make the ordinary, extraordinary. To question the status quo. To take a boundary and extend it.

Over thirty years and six generations, the Civic has evolved into one of the world’s favourite cars. But we knew we weren’t finished yet. We stayed true to our philosophy – the power of dreams. And decided to see just how far we could take a great idea. The steering wheel. The rearview mirror. The gearshift. Always just there. Always effortlessly efficient. That’s what makes the Civic so remarkable. There’s so much that you simply don’t have to think about. Take the interior space. It’s only when we draw your attention to the fact that the Civic is one of the most spacious car in its class, that you realise it doesn’t even look big outside. In fact it’s actually shorter than the previous model. But inside you’ll find it surprisingly roomy. Clever design that works. We always aim to enhance your driving experience. To maximise your comfort. Who says you have to stretch to change gear? Certainly not our designers. By mounting the gearshift on the dashboard, we created a more natural, comfortable driving position. And where is it written that the exhaust must run down the centre of a car? We don’t think it has to. Moving the exhaust to one side means you don’t need a central tunnel, so our 3 and 5 door models have a completely flat floor thus creating a spacious and comfortable ride with plenty of legroom for rear passengers. We’ve even created extra room by making the rear suspension more compact. When you drive a Civic, there’s so much efficient design you can’t help but wonder if it’s always been this way.

It hasn’t. Honda have made it this way. The Civic is every inch a car of today. But it’s ancestry stretches all the way back to the first ever Honda: a full-blooded sports car, the Honda S600. Whatever the mechanical equivalent of DNA is, it has passed on family traits to the Civic. Front and rear bumpers support aerodynamic performance, and give the Civic a sleek, stylish profile. Side skirts both enhance its looks and reduce road noise. And of course the rear spoiler performs the same function as on the Civic’s touring car brother: smoothing the airflow, and making the car stable at high speed. And when you’ve gone to these lengths to create the perfect profile, you don’t compromise. So we’ve built the indicators into the door mirrors*, where they’re easier for other drivers to see. After all, every enhancement is designed not just to look good, but to improve safety and performance. *Only available on certain grades For us, racing is a laboratory, where we put our ideas to the ultimate test. Then we take the best elements and put them into road cars like the Civic. So what have we learned? To create some of the most thrilling engines – which just might explain why we’re the world’s largest engine manufacturer.

Technology we developed for Formula 1 cars evolved into our VTEC technology, which delivers extra power through the engine whenever you need it, as well as providing exceptional fuel economy. i-VTEC (i standing for intelligent) is our second generation VTEC engine. By combining both VTEC (variable valve timing and lift, electronic control) and VTC (variable timing control) to deliver power technology, i-VTEC reduces weight, boosts output, and further improves fuel economy. Then there’s our five-link double-wishbone suspension. It’s helped us win six consecutive F1 titles by being perfectly balanced to provide pin sharp responses and real stability at higher speeds. More importantly, it gives the Civic it’s amazing driving dynamics. Race tracks are the most demanding places on earth so where better to test our cars? We’ve built not one but two Grand Prix standard circuits at Motegi, Japan’s only CART series tracks, and a classic Formula 1 circuit at Suzuka, giving us unlimited track time to push our cars to the limit. But you’re going to be driving your Civic on the road, not our tracks, so we take a pre-production model to every country in which we sell and test it under local conditions. Then we adjust the set-up, right down to individual components, so it’s perfectly adapted to the roads you drive on every day. Nothing beats making a living from your passion in life.

The Surbo gives more energy, enabling quick acceleration towards the more economical higher gears in a shorter time. If driving on highways, the vehicle easily exceeds speed limits due to the higher torque, so there will be more rolling and thus exceptional fuel engine savings. In the city, there is the same extra rolling momentum due to quicker acceleration, but much of that can be lost to braking. Thus, fuel savings can range from minimum zero (during hard sprinting in the city) to over twenty percent on the highway. Most customers report an overall improvement of 10% in economy. The following cars have been made more frugal with Surbo, control too. Running without cruise control, the highway consumption was 14-15 km/litre, but when the cruise control was turned on, Azman could feel the accelerator being automatically depressed further from his foot, and the extra pedal travel brought the highway consumption back to the original 12-13 km/litre. This shows that with a Surbo, the driver will press less on the accelerator and this will contribute to a more relaxing drive, and of course more economy.

Economy Tips Here’s how Surbo users can improve economy for their cars.

1. Keep to the factory spec for the overall wheel diameter. This is the size of the rim plus tyres, and if you make the rims bigger, then you can use a lower profile tyre to keep to the original size. You can usually find this size on a sticker on the front door. Likewise, you should use the recommended tyre pressure. This is important for the car body to roll and push the engine the moment the Surbo is activated.

2. In between filter element changes, remove the element and shake the dust off to allow more air in.

3. Have the spark ignition timing tuned to factory spec where adjustable. Also important is the CO (carbon monoxide) emission level–tune by computer to as close to 0% as possible.

4. Top up the battery level, as a lack of electrolyte means a smaller store of available electricity, so the alternator has to load the engine more and make it consume more fuel.

5. Straighten and shorten the air intake layout to minimize friction and bend losses. The Surbo should be fitted nearest to and most directly at the throttle (but before any minor air connection to prevent bypass), to get and deliver the maximum back pressure in the air intake. Note: for before-filter installations, although the filter is in between, these have the advantage of free air before the Surbo, and a pressure-drop analysis will show both cases to be on the same footing.

6. Try to connect to cold air wherever possible as colder air has a higher density. For example, you can connect the air inlet to an opening in the grille.

7. Adding a boost meter might help, as this helps you get the most engine torque per throttle travel. If you press less, less fuel will be used up.

8. Upgrade to Twin Surbos as these simply have better low end torque and have stretched the mileage on single-Surbo cars. The Twin has been shown by the dynamometer to deliver more torque between 2500-3000 rpm so if you spend more time in that region (eg. during cruising) it will give better economy than the single Surbo.

9. Our general guideline is that maximum torque at the low and mid rpm range go hand in hand with fuel economy, because most of the driving time is spent in these ranges. It may not be advisable to shift gears upwards at too low an rpm, as the starting rpm in the next gear may be too low for power, and you will have to press more on the accelerator, and end up spending more time in the low, uneconomical gears. The rate of fuel injected at any moment is proportional to throttle travel x rpm x no. of cylinders. For a given car it must depend mainly on throttle travel (how much you press on the accelerator) and rpm (which you can control via gear selection). The total consumption is the sum of throttle
travel x rpm x time spent in each gear over the journey.

Fuel system components include a fuel tank located in the trunk, an integrated fuel pressure regulator, an in-tank fuel shutoff valve, high pressure fuel lines, electronically controlled multipoint fuel injectors, and other equipment. Fuel system components in the Civic CNG comply with NFPA-52 standards.

Your vehicle is equipped with genuine Honda component parts that have been designed and approved for use in a compressed natural gas vehicle. Never modify or replace any original components or parts with those specified for a gasoline- powered vehicle. Improper parts or components can damage your vehicle’s fuel system and affect your vehicle’s safety and performance.

Fuel Cutoff System The in-tank fuel shutoff valve is controlled by the ignition switch. When the ignition switch is in the LOCK (0) or ACCESSORY (I) position, the valve is closed, shutting off fuel flow to the engine. It opens when the ignition switch is turned to ON (II). This is similar to how an electric fuel pump works in a gasoline-powered vehicle. A manual shutoff valve is located underneath the vehicle, near the rear tire on the driver’s side. We recommend that you locate this valve so you can find it quickly. To turn off the valve, turn the lever one-quarter turn clockwise. Turn it counterclockwise to turn the valve back on.

Turn off the valve if you ever suspect a fuel leak or are involved in an accident. The maximum load for your vehicle is 850 lbs. This figure includes the total weight of all occupants, cargo, and accessories. To determine the correct cargo and luggage load limit:

1. Locate the statement, ‘‘the combined weight of occupants and cargo should never exceed 850 lbs’’ on your vehicle’s placard (on the driver’s doorjamb).
2. Determine the combined weight of the driver and passengers that will be riding in the vehicle. (Four is the seating capacity of your vehicle.)
3. Subtract the combined weight of the driver and passengers from 850 lbs.
4. The resulting figure equals the available load capacity. For example, if there will be four 150 lbs occupants in your vehicle, the amount of available cargo and luggage load capacity is 250 lbs. 4 × 150 lbs = 600 lbs 850 lbs – 600 lbs = 250 lbs
5. Determine the combined weight of accessories, luggage, and cargo being loaded in the vehicle. The weight may not safely exceed the
available cargo and luggage load capacity calculated in step 4.

Malfunction Indicator Lamp This indicator comes on for a few seconds when you turn the ignition switch to the ON (II) position.

Follow the instructions under If the
Fuel System Has a Leak on page 28 of this supplement.

This means that when the outside air gets very cold [below 25°F (-4°C)], the pressure of the natural gas inside the tank goes down, and the fuel
gauge may indicate that you have less fuel than what actually remains in the tank. Keep this in mind if the low fuel indicator comes on while
you are driving in cold weather. If this indicator starts blinking and the fuel level reading goes down to empty when the engine is running, it
indicates a problem in the fuel system. Have the vehicle checked by an authorized Honda Civic GX dealer as soon as possible.

Your Civic GX is designed to operate on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). The natural gas you use to refuel must meet NFPA-52 and SAE J1616
standards for fuel composition and quality. If you use a fuel that does not meet these standards, you may feel a decrease in engine power and your vehicle’s emissions controls may be damaged.

Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) The main component of compressed natural gas is methane, a highly flammable, colorless gas. While it is
the same gas that is burned in everyday home appliances such as kitchen stoves and water heaters, the CNG in your vehicle is stored under high pressure (maximum 3,600 psi/24,800 kPa). The CNG fuel system in your Civic, including the tank and hose, has been designed to hold gas at this
pressure. It has also been tested for safety. You should never smell gas or hear a hissing sound unless you are refueling. If you smell gas or
hear a hissing sound at any other time, you need to shut down the fuel system. Follow the instructions on page 13.

Compressed natural gas is flammable and highly explosive. You could be killed or seriously injured if leaking natural gas is ignited. If you suspect a leak, have your vehicle immediately inspected and repaired by an authorized Honda Civic GX dealer. Your vehicle has an identifying ‘‘CNG’’ label attached next to the rear license plate. Do not remove this label. This label is necessary for insuring your vehicle. Driving without this label may violate the laws or regulations in some states. Refueling Procedure There are two methods of refueling, fast filling or slow filling. Fast filling is normally used in fuel stations for natural gas vehicles. It takes about 3 to 5 minutes to fill up the fuel tank. Slow filling is done with a vehicle
refueling appliance. Refueling takes about 1 hour per gasoline gallon equivalent.

Always observe all safety recommendations and operating instructions on the refueling equipment. When refueling, you should use a fuel fill nozzle that complies with ANSI/AGA NGV-1-1994 standards. Nozzles are designed according to their maximum fill pressure: P24 for 2,400 psi (pounds per square inch), P30 for 3,000 psi, and P36 for 3,600 psi. Your Civic’s maximum fill pressure is 3,600 psi (24,800 kPa), so you should refuel with a P36 nozzle. Using a P30 nozzle will fill the tank to the second (3,000 psi) fill mark on the fuel gauge. Using a P24 nozzle will not fill the tank completely.

During a fast fill, the natural gas will be warmed by the refueling process, causing the pressure in the tank to rise and reduce the amount of fuel
you can put in.
