The optimum time to determine the engine oil level is all about 5 minutes following a fully warmed engine is turn off. Don’t check oil level before beginning the engine after it’s sitting overnight. Checking Chrysler engine oil level once the engine is cold provides you with an incorrect reading through.

Checking the oil as the Chrysler vehicle is on level ground, will enhance the precision from the oil level blood pressure measurements. Keep up with the oil level between your MIN and MAX markings about the dipstick. Adding one quart of oil once the reading through reaches the MIN mark can lead to a MAX reading through on these engines. Overfilling the crankcase as shown by an oil level over the “MAX” mark about the engine oil dipstick may cause oil oygenation, be responsible for lack of oil pressure and a rise in oil temperature. This may damage your engine.

Change Engine Oil. Road conditions as well as your type of driving affects the interval where your oil ought to be transformed. Check the list below to determine if any affect you. • Day and evening temps are below 32°F (0°C). • Stop and go driving. • Extensive engine idling. • Driving in dusty conditions. • Short outings of under 10 miles (16 km). • A lot more than 50% of the driving reaches sustained high speeds throughout warm weather, above 90°F (32°C). • Trailer towing. • Taxi, Police, or delivery service (commercial service). • Off-road or desert operation.

The AMC 20 sports 12 bolts and a WWI helmet-shaped cover. It’s ring and pinion is 3/8” larger than the D44, but uses smaller shafts and smaller axle tubes, which tend to flex more and lead to breakage. Two versions, narrow track and wide track, were used in 1976-and-later Jeep CJ’s, Wagoneers, and fullsize Cherokees. Jeep CJs, the Model 20 rear end is both strong and weak.

An 8 3/4-inch-diameter ring gear provides strength; weaknesses are the housing itself, two-piece shafts, and the axle-to-hub retaining method. Converting to one-piece axles or full-floaters gives this axle better stamina. This semi-floating rear axle features a 10-bolt cover and appeared in various Jeep XJ’s and ZJ’s as early as 1991. It has also been used as an alternative to the Dana 35C when those units were not available, and the cover design is so similar that it’s difficult to distinguish between the two.

All Spicer Carrier Type Axles (rigid or leaf spring) are identified with a manufacturing date and Bill of Material (part number) stamped on the right or left hand tube on driving axles. Each axle contains a gear ratio tag and if axle is equipped with a limited slip differential, it will have a tag specifying the type of limited slip lubricant to be used.

The Bill of Material will always contain six digits (basic number), followed by a dash numer. Example: 610036-4. The seventh digit, the -4, will identify axle ratio and options.

TRANSTEC rebuild kits for Chrysler 41TE (A-604) now includes low / reverse piston housing. These houses are made of pressed steel and are sensitive to distortions, especially around the screw holes. Therefore, the house always replaced during a rebuild. ATRA is recommended using a new home in their last Technical Bulletin # 231st.

The piston housing is affixed to the rear of the case with three screws. After the reconstruction, it is very important to tighten the screw factory standards – £ 40 inches. incorrect torque of the screw can cause a leak. A leak will cause a loss of pressure / low reverse clutch, resulting in forward and reverse delayed severe exposures or demotions drag-bang first, and default “limp mode” when it’s hot. There is a seal between the piston and the housing where the oil route that applies the sealant to small clutch / rear. We have received reports of leakage due to failure of this package. The theory is that the clutch pressure low / low back forces / piston housing back against the case, compact case. This leaves a space between the casing and the piston seal, where the low / reverse supply oil to escape.

Even TRANSTEC already upgraded this package to a higher density material, we were not convinced that the block itself was the problem. In all the calls we’ve taken from the reconstruction, we found a suspicious package at only 0.001 “thinner than a new gasket. Again, a couple of inappropriate housing screws and jammed the houses can be much of the problem. So, to eliminate all possible causes of failure, we also have housing in all new piston seal TRANSTEC & seal kits and overhaul kits. TRANSTEC The part number for this house is # 81638 (OEM # 4431648). TRANSTEC All kits with a date code H94 and later include accommodation.

The Problem Several OE Chrysler fuel pump modules feature a paper strainer/filter element. An Airtex design change to this element results in a fuel pump that looks significantly different from the original fuel pump.

The Solution The Airtex pump features a dual-zone strainer/filtration design to provide better trapping of fuel system contaminates. In order to improve filtration of fuel entering the fuel pump, Airtex uses a media-material fuel pump filter/strainer. To better filter fuel going to the fuel injectors, the Airtex pump relocates the paper filter into the regulator assembly.

The use of both media-material filter/strainer in addition to the paper filter/strainer provides improved filtration of fuel throughout the system, ensuring contaminates are trapped at multiple points. The difference in appearance is related to the enhanced dual-zone filtration, improving performance while retaining the precise fit required in today’s applications.

For exposed underhood wiring, teflon insulated wire with its associated high temperature capability is recommended. Additional connectors, and hardware, that is not included with this unit may also be needed. As the mounting configuration will vary significantly from vehicle to vehicle, hardware to mount the tachometer to the vehicle is not included. Whether you use self tapping or a machine screw and nut configuration, # 8 hardware including flat and lockwashers is recommended.

CYLINDER SELECTION This tachometer should be checked for cylinder setting before installation (see figures 1 through 4). Position the Cylinder selector switch on the rear of the tachometer so that the switch actuator is opposite the number which matches the number of cylinders in the engine, or the slot lines up with the number which matches the number of cylinders in the engine depending on the model of your tachometer. As noted in the DISTRIBUTORLESS IGNITION SYSTEM CONNECTIONS section of this manual under Chrysler Corporation, connection to Pin 43 of the Single Board Engine Controller on Distributorless Ignition equipped Chrysler vehicles requires that the CYLinder selector switch be set to the four (4) cylinder position, regardless of the number of cylinders in the engine.

LAMP SUBSTITUTION OR REPLACEMENT Your tachometer is supplied with an automotive type, wedge base (full size tachometers) or subminiature wedge base (mini tachometers) lamp, for illumination. This lamp should provide satisfactory illumination intensity in most applications, however the following substitute lamps are available at your local auto parts store, and may allow you to custom tailor the illumination characteristics of the tachometer to your application. Note the higher the MSCD (Mean Spherical Candela) of the lamp, the brighter it is. The Sport Tach is supplied with a # 194 lamp.

The lamp socket is located at the top rear of the tachometer (see figures 1 through 4). To remove the lamp, gently grasp the black lamp socket (use pliers if necessary) and twist it counter-clockwise approximately 1/8 turn until it stops. Pull the socket with lamp straight out of the tachometer housing. Remove the lamp from its socket by pulling it straight out. Replace the lamp as required following the chart above. Reinstall the socketed lamp by rotating it against the tachometer’s PC board until it drops into place, and then rotate it approximately 1/8 turn clockwise until it reaches its mechanical stop.

Permanent Removal of Dust Shield The dust shield must be permanently removed from both front wheels of the vehicle, to accommodate the AeroRotors. This involves cutting each shield with sheet metal snips, and risking exposure to sharp metal edges. These operations can be dangerous, and serious injury can occur. For anyone who is not competent or comfortable performing these operations, StopTech firmly recommends that they seek the services of a trained professional.

Caliper Clearance Most 17” wheels will clear the outer diameter of the caliper for a 328mm or 332mm rotor kit. For a 355mm kit, a minimum 18” wheel is typically required, and for a 380mm rotor kit, a minimum 19” wheel is needed. The more critical clearance, however, is the gap between the spokes of the wheel and the face of the caliper. Do not assume that a larger-diameter wheel will automatically clear the face of the caliper.

Wheel Spacers Wheel spacers can provide extra clearance to the outer face of the caliper. This will also space out the entire wheel, widening the track width of the vehicle. Fender clearances should be checked on lowered cars, and longer lug studs or wheel bolts are usually required.

Brake Noise Certain brake pad compounds make more noise than others. Proper anti-squeal shim plates between the caliper pistons and backing plate of the pad help to reduce the problem. Anti-squeal lubricants are also available, to reduce some of the noise. The reality is that performance pads are more prone to brake squeal.

Caliper, Hat and Bracket Finish Disclaimer Many wheel-cleaning solutions contain strong acids that may damage the finish on any caliper or aluminum anodized finish, especially the plating on the hardware. Check for adverse effects by trying a small amount of the cleaner in question on an inconspicuous area. Avoid over-spraying, and rinse cleaning solutions off as quickly as possible. StopTech is not liable for damage to calipers, hats or bracket finishes, due to corrosive chemical exposure.

Occasionally, however, manufacturers may use an alternate fastener, so it’s advisable to check that each tool correctly fits the fastener before loosening or tightening it. The following tools and equipment will be needed:
18mm wrench or socket (1/2” drive suggested)
17mm wrench
14mm wrench or socket (in some cases, 9/16” may be required)
13mm wrench
11mm box wrench
10mm wrench or socket
5mm Allen (hex) wrench
Medium and large flat-blade screwdrivers
Pliers
Sheet metal snips or similar cutters
Torque wrenches capable of 10-85 lb-ft settings
Small drip tray or several rags
Small funnel or suitable means of filling master cylinder reservoir
Check manufacturer’s recommendation for compatibility. StopTech recommends flushing brake fluid every one-to-two years, or more often under severe usage conditions. If not done recently, the installation of a brake kit is an excellent opportunity to refresh your brake fluid, or to upgrade to a higher-performance fluid, such as Motul 600.

Find a suitable location inside the cab to mount the TruSpeed module. The module is water resistant, but it should be installed away from high heat sources such as the heating ducts and vents. In most instances, it can easily be attached to the bottom of the dash using the supplied two-sided tape. Separate the red and black wires from the yellow and green wires on the TruSpeed module. Using the supplied ring terminal, route and attach the black wire from the module to a suitable ground. Trim the wire to length as necessary.

Locate the fuse block for the vehicle. Fuse block location can be found in the vehicle owner’s manual or service manual. Refer to chart A to identify an appropriate switched 12-volt source on the fuse block for your application. The circuit should be hot when the ignition switch is in both the “start” and “run” positions. Use the fuse puller tool (normally attached to the fuse block or the access door) to pull the fuse indicated in the chart out of the block and set aside. Turn the ignition switch to the “on” position. Using a test light or voltmeter, determine which side of the fuse terminal (where you just removed the fuse) is “hot,” or receiving 12 volts. Turn the ignition switch back to the “off” position. Slide the appropriate fuse tapper into the hot side of the circuit (two are provided with the module: one for standard blade-type fuses and one for mini-blade fuses used in most late-model vehicles) and replace the fuse.

Trim the red wire from the TruSpeed module as necessary, attach the supplied spade terminal, and connect it to the fuse tapper. LOCATING THE SPEED SENSOR (All Jeep and some Dodge vehicles)… The speed sensor is located on the tailhousing of the transmission (on two-wheel drives) or
transfer case (on four-wheel drives). The tailhousing is the last 8 to 10 inches of the transfer case where the rear driveshaft attaches. There should be a two- or three-wire plug visible on the sensor.

Release the plastic locking piece and pull the plug straight out of the sensor. Refer to chart “A” for the appropriate wire identification (color code) for the specific year and model of the vehicle. The color codes in the chart are listed with the primary color of the wire listed first and the stripe color (if any) listed second. For example, WHT/ORG is a white wire with an orange stripe. Locate the correct color-code wire on the speed sensor plug and unwrap it from the rest of the factory wire loom. The TruSpeed is connected in two different ways: For all Chrysler and Toyota applications, route the yellow and green wires from the TruSpeed module to the speed sensor plug at the transmission or transfer case. For late-model Ford and Dodge vehicles, locate the appropriate color-coded wire (indicated in the chart) in the main plug on the ABS module. The location of the ABS module can be found in the factory service manual. Disconnect the plug from the ABS module. Cut the proper color-coded wire and strip both ends of insulation. IMPORTANT: [Diagram 1] It is strongly recommended that all connections to the sensor wire are soldered. Use the following method: Slide the supplied heat shrink tubing over one of the wires to be connected. Crimp each connection using the supplied non-insulated terminals. Solder both wires to the terminal. After allowing the soldered connection to cool, slide the heat shrink tubing over the connection and use an appropriate heat source to shrink the tubing. Wrap the completed connection with electrical tape and place back in the factory wire loom. Connect the green wire from the TruSpeed to the wire end leading to the speed sensor or ABS plug. Connect the yellow wire from the TruSpeed to the end leading to the wire loom / computer. NOTE: Improperly connecting the yellow and green wires will prevent the unit from operating properly. If applicable, reconnect the plug to the ABS module.
