Inspect the engine for potential hazards. Before starting the engine, ensure that no one is on, underneath, or close to the engine car. All protective guards and all protective covers must be installed if the engine must be started in order to perform service procedures. To help prevent an accident that is caused by parts in rotation, work around the parts carefully.

Do not bypass the automatic shutoff circuits. Do not disable the automatic shutoff circuits. The circuits are provided in order to help prevent personal injury. The circuits are also provided in order to help prevent engine damage. On the initial start-up of a new engine or an engine that has been serviced, prepare to stop the engine if an overs peed condition occurs. This may be accomplished by shutting off the fuel supply to the engine and/or shutting off the air supply to the engine.

If a warning tag is attached to the engine start switch or to the controls, DO NOT start the engine or move the controls. Consult with the person that attached the warning tag before the engine is started. All protective guards and all protective covers must be installed if the engine must be started in order to perform service procedures. To help prevent an accident that is caused by parts in rotation, work around the parts carefully.

Start the engine from the operator’s compartment or from the engine start switch. Always start the engine according to the procedure that is described in the Operation and Maintenance Manual, “Engine Starting” topic in the Operation Section. Knowing the correct procedure will help to prevent major damage to the engine components. Knowing the procedure will also help to prevent personal injury.

To ensure that the jacket water heater (if equipped) and/or the lube oil heater (if equipped) is working properly, check the water temperature anQ the oil temperature during heater operation. Engine exhaust contains products of combustion which can be harmful to your health. Always start the engine and operate the engine in a well ventilated area. If the engine is started in an enclosed area, vent the engine exhaust to the outside.

The electronic engines that are covered by this manual have the following characteristics: direct fuel injection, electronic unit injection that is mechanically actuated, turbocharged, and air-to-air aftercooled (ATAAC). The electronic engine control system provides the following functions: electronic governing, automatic air to fuel ratio control, torque rise shaping, injection timing control, and system diagnostics.

An electronic governor controls the output of the unit injectors in order to maintain the engine rpm that is desired. The functions of the governor include a programmable low idle and a 20 rpm to 200 rpm governor overrun. Very high injection pressures are produced by electronically controlled, mechanically actuated unit injectors. The injectors combine the pumping and the electronic fuel metering (duration and timing) during injection. The unit injectors accurately control smoke limiting, white smoke, and engine acceleration rates.

One of those technologies is deceleration fuel cutoff (DFCO). While the vehicle is decelerating or slowing down, fuel is automatically shut off to the Cruze’s advanced Ecotec engine. When the driver accelerates, the fuel automatically begins flowing again and the vehicle accelerates as the driver commands. It’s a seamless process that the driver and passengers don’t notice.

This is an effective technology that helps keep money in a customer’s pocket when at the pump. The Cruze is packed with fuel-saving technologies, the development systems manager for the Cruze’s 1.4-litre turbocharged engine. These types of cost-effective technologies allow Chevrolet to offer customers a vehicle that achieves hybrid-like efficiency without the cost of the hybrid technology

How it works: DFCO is enabled when the driver’s foot is off the accelerator pedal and the vehicle is coasting. Through integration of engine and transmission controls, the engine speed is carefully controlled under these deceleration conditions. Fuel automatically begins flowing back to the engine when the driver accelerates or when the engine speed approaches idle conditions.

This technology is on Cruze models with both automatic and manual transmissions. Cruze Eco with the standard six-speed manual transmission remains the most fuel-efficient gas-powered/non-hybrid vehicle in North America, with a rating of 4.6L/100km on the highway.

Chevrolet celebrates its centennial as a global automotive brand with annual sales of about 4.25 million vehicles in more than 140 countries. From today’s Cruze Eco which consumes just 4.6 L/100 km on the highway to the Volt coming this fall, which provides up to 80 kilometres of electric, gasoline-free driving and an additional 500 kilometres of extended range, Chevrolet offers gas-friendly to gas-free solutions. Chevrolet provides customers with fuel-efficient, safe and reliable vehicles that deliver high quality, expressive design, spirited Chevrolet performance and value. The Chevrolet portfolio includes award-winning passenger cars and crossovers such as Cruze, Malibu, Equinox and Traverse and a host of new, smaller, highly efficient models to come including the all-new Orlando and Sonic (fall 2011) and Spark (2012). Chevrolet also provides iconic performance cars such as Corvette and Camaro as well as dependable, long-lasting pickups and SUVs such as Silverado and Suburban. Most new Chevrolet models offer OnStar safety, security and convenience technologies including OnStar Hands-Free Calling, Automatic Crash Response and Stolen Vehicle Slowdown.

For the 1957 season, Edward N. Cole, Vice President and General Manager of Chevrolet sent the former head of Hudson’s racing to set up the Southern Engineering and Development Corporation Operation (SEDCO). He, along with Bradley Dennis, Paul McDuffie and the Clements brothers, Louis and Crawford built the 1957 Chevy for Chevrolet’s “cup” or NASCAR teams.

It was set up as a division of Nally Chevrolet, in Atlanta, Georgia and they produced what is rumored to be a total of 10 cars and 2 test mules. organizations that built Black Widows and they never came off an actual Chevrolet production line, there is no record as to the total number of cars built. In early 1957, Congressional hearings were conducted about stock car racing. They claimed that the automakers racing advertisements were contributing to racing and reckless driving on the road. During these hearings, in February 1957, the Automobile Manufacturers Association prepared a resolution suggesting all manufactures stop auto racing activities, auto racing based advertising and the support of race teams.

Chevrolet endorsed this resolution in May 1957 and in June, Ed Cole instructed Vince Piggins to shut down the SEDCO operation due to Chevrolets endorsement. When the SEDCO deal ended, Bradley Dennis and Paul McDuffie opened the “Atlanta Tune Up Service” which continued to build cars for NASCAR teams. A Black Widow started out as a 1957 Chevy number one suggestion in the “Guide” and the model that most of the cars were made from) equipped with a roll bar and a specially designed driver seat with a shoulder pad on the backrest. It was a perfect start as it did not have a rear seat and it was a stripped down bare bones…

The 2010 Malibu is backed by the 100,000 mile/5-year 1 transferable Powertrain Limited Warranty. That’s 40,000 more miles than Toyota or Honda offers. Add in our Roadside Assistance and Courtesy Transportation Programs, and you have the best coverage in America.

The accolades just keep pouring in. Heralded by critics and owners alike — with more than 30 awards to its credit — Chevy Malibu continues to command attention and acclaim. The 2009 Malibu was also named a best new faMily vehiCle by Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com2 and a “best buy” by Consumers Digest. A beautifully crafted car with a precision build and attention to detail, it’s also fuel-efficient, offering up to 33 MpG highway.

The StabiliTrak Electronic Stability Control System helps you stay the course by detecting the difference between the steering wheel angle and the direction the vehicle is actually turning. It then uses the brakes and, if necessary, adjusts engine torque to help you keep your vehicle on your desired track.

Malibu is engineered to be safe in the three ways that matter most on the road. To react to unexpected situations, every Chevy Malibu comes equipped with StabiliTrak (including Traction Control) and four-wheel antilock brakes — all standard. To reduce the effects of an accident, every Malibu has SIX AIR BAGS,1 including head-curtain side-impact. Furthermore, the 2009 Malibu earned the highest possible government rating — FIVE STARS — for frontal and side-impact crash tests.2 To respond to an accident, Malibu is ready with level of safety the competition just can’t match. In certain types of collisions, built-in vehicle sensors can automatically alert an OnStar Advisor who is immediately connected into your vehicle and can request emergency help be sent to your exact GPS location. It even sends specific crash data so first responders can be prepared in advance for potential injuries. It’s part of the Directions & Connections Plan, standard for the first year.

In our modern digital age, technology is changing the way we live, think and interact. It’s even changing the way we drive. Take your favorite music wherever you go with a CD player with MP3 playback and with three trial months — all standard. OnStar1 — with the Directions & Connections Plan standard for the first year — is more than a safety feature. It’s a spontaneity feature. With the included OnStar TURN-BY-TURN NAVIGATION,2 you can take those spur-of-the-moment side trips without a map. Available BLUETOOTH® wireless technology4 for select compatible phones allows hands-free calling and even mutes the stereo to take your calls. The Driver Information Center features readouts on 10 driver personalization settings as well as information on 34 vehicle functions, including oil life, tire pressure,5 outside temperature, trip odometer and more.

Canvas Top Removal. Refer to your Owner’s Manual for instructions on lowering and removing the canvas top. ALL hardware for your soft top should be removed. This includes the trim around the body. Some of the screws from the Canvas Top Hardware will be used in the Hardtop installation, so keep them available.

Front Lid Installation. STEP 1: Place the Front Lid in position over the Driver and Front Passenger seats, and fasten the front of the lid to the windshield (Diagram A). STEP 2: Take 2 of the Joint Brackets (BRK-5) and place them on the bolt threads extending from the Fiberglass Lid, and hold them in place with 2 Speed Knobs (SKB-1).

STEP 3: After the Lid is in position, hook and close the front of the lid with the Windshield Cam Locks (It may be necessary to loosen the front factory cam locks with a Phillips head screwdriver for additional adjustment in some cases), and then tighten the Speed Knobs and Rear Brackets into place, so that the Joint Brackets (BRK-5) tighten against the cross bar of the vehicle. (Diagram B)

Fiberglass Back Section. STEP 1: Secure the 2 Front Brackets (BRK-6) to the vehicle frame on both sides using the screws from the Canvas Top Hardware. Use the bow bracket screw holes. DO NOT TIGHTEN AT THIS TIME. (Diagram C)

STEP 2: Secure the 2 Rear Brackets (BRK-7) on both sides. (Diagram D). STEP 3: Reinstall all unused Factory bolts to their original position without the brackets they held. STEP 4: Install Gasket 172” (GSK-2) around perimeter of the opening. Also super glue the ends of the perimeter gasket to the rubber pieces at the end of the metal flange on each side. Use the 51” (GSK-2) to replace the factory gasket on the tailgate of the vehicle.

STEP 5: Place the Back Section in place directly over the open rear cabin aligning the mounting bolts on the inside of the top with the elongated slots on the front brackets Align the rear bolts on the inside of the hardtop with the vertical slots on the rear brackets. (Diagrams C and D)

(Tip: It may be helpful to have someone on the inside of the vehicle pulling back on the rubber gasket along the perimeter while installing the top to prevent it from pinching/smashing the gasket down causing a tight or improper fit. Check for proper alignment to ensure the rubber seal on the vehicle interior is not doubled over in the lower corners.)

The Cruze is low on breakthrough technologies, but it is a thoroughly well-engineered car, with an ultra-strong structure and low center of gravity. GM says 65 percent of its body and structure are made from high-strength steel. The fit and finish is improved over current GM small cars’, as highlighted by the small gaps between the body panels, which require precise stamping and accurate assembly. On the road, the rigid body and the extensive sound dampening translate into less noise.

The Cruze handles well. When pushed, it stays on the safe side and moves into good-natured understeer until the electronic stability control gently kicks in. The hydraulic power steering offers good feedback for an economy car, but despite fat tires and 16- or 17-inch wheels, it does
not display any sporting aspirations.

Neither, for that matter, do the current gasoline engines, but the 1.6-liter works adequately for most occasions. And although we disliked its nonlinear throttle response, this inexpensive engine is a better choice than the 1.8-liter unit, which is not much quicker but sounds thrashy when
pushed. The larger engine is also hampered by its optional six-speed autobox. It works unobtrusively during normal driving and keeps the revs low on the freeway, but it’s not up to spirited antics. It is painfully slow to respond, which manages to stifle any soul the 1.8-liter might have.

It’s a different story with the turbo-diesel. Coupled to the crisp five-speed manual, it is far more fun to drive than the gasoline-powered models. Up to 236 lb-ft of torque is on tap, plenty to dart through gaps in traffic, and top speed with the oil burner is 131 mph. But the engine is expensive, and it’s heavy enough that the car sacrifices some agility. What the Cruze needs is a turbocharged gasoline engine—luckily, one is on the way. Until the 1.4-liter turbocharged four arrives—and, we hope, the 2.0-liter—the current powertrains will lag behind the capabilities of the chassis.
