The Jeep Patriot concept was first introduced at the 2005 International Motor Show in Frankfurt, Germany. The 2008 Patriot has an instrument panel that is nicely laid out and easily read regardless of the driver’s seat position. The engine has adequate power, although I would have preferred a little more vigor and a little less engine noise. The Patriot is larger than the Jeep Compass, but smaller than the Commander.

Personally I think the Compass takes sales away from the Patriot, while the Patriot is the better vehicle. The Patriot is a great off-road vehicle, but don’t think you can take it to a place like Honduras and go off-road for a picnic. It does fine off-road on well-worn paths or familiar trails, but it is a long way from being as rugged and strong as its ancestors. The Patriot has a strong front bumper and a grille that is stylish and adds strength to the bumper. The only real criticism I had was the braking system, which seemed a little bit stiff, and the Patriot didn’t seem to have the alertness that one might need for a critical quick stop. The Patriot sits up high and the driver is some distance from the windshield. The legroom for the driver is super and a tall person can drive in relaxed comfort.

The Jeep Patriot has a Lifetime Powertrain limited warranty, 3- year or 36,000-mile basic limited warranty, and 3-year or 36,000- mile 24-hour towing assistance. It also has a 5-star Government Safety Rating for side front seat and crash rear seat. Anti-lock 4-wheel disc brakes, speed-sensitive power locks, automatically dimming rearview mirrors, rear window defroster, and rear window wipers are part of the basic package. SIRIUS Satellite Radio and steering- wheel-mounted audio controls are also part of the basic package, which surprised me. Snowstorms charged across the Midwest and southwest parts of the United States before moving into the high plains and Great Lakes area.

During the first part of the week, in Dallas, we received five inches of snow and later we got over ten in some areas. The Jeep Patriot performed marvelously in this type of weather. Frozen bridges and deep pockets of snow hampered my commute to work very little. I just opened the power sunroof covering, turned on the daytime running light system, felt the power of the 2.4L 4-cyl DOHC 16V Dual VVI Engine (172 hp) and allowed the wiper blades to keep time to the music on the stereo. I felt just like Janice Joplin and her Bobby McGee. The snow fell in large feathery clumps and the north wind was iceberg frigid; yet, my friendly Patriot took it all in stride while delivering me safely to my destination. And did I mention, I got nearly 25 miles to the gallon during the time I drove the Patriot?

Background:
The transmission override frees up the computer’s control of first and second gear in the AW4 automatic transmission found in Jeep Cherokees from 1988 to 2001 as well as the 1993 Grand Cherokee. The engineers at Aisin Warner decided that Jeep owners did not need manual control over the first two gears in their transmission. They designed the transmission to have a “1-2” slot in the shifter to control both first and second gear with the computer. Therefore, the user does not have any control when the transmission shifts to second or first. For example, the transmission does not allow engine braking in first gear because the computer refuses to shift into first. Additionally, the computer shifts into second after about 4500 rpm, a detrimental effect in sand and snow. A user mod has been out for quite some time to free up these gears. However, with the
integration of the OBD2 system in 1997, the check engine light will trip when this mod is used. The MAF transmission override is designed to be compatible with OBD2 systems and will not trip the light.

What to expect from this device:
The transmission override has three positions, D, 2, and 1. “D” position: In the “D” position, the override has no effect and the transmission shifts normally. “2” Position: In the “2” position the transmission is forced into second gear, it will not shift into any other gear. In this position the vehicle will even start in second gear. Due to the design of the transmission hydraulics, engine braking in this position has the following features. When the override is in the “2” position the shifter is in the “D” position, the transmission will not provide engine braking. When the throttle is removed, the transmission goes into a freewheeling mode offering little resistance. This freewheeling mode is beneficial, it prevents the wheels from locking up if the transmission accidentally is forced into second with the override during high speeds. Another benefit is that the vehicle will not immediately start to slow when the throttle is removed, but maintains the response of second gear. To engage engine braking, shift the lever into the “3” or “1-2” position. In these positions, the hydraulics in the transmission allows engine braking in second gear. “1” Position: The “1” position operates in a similar fashion to the “2” position. The transmission will be forced into first gear, it will not shift into any other gear. While the shift lever is in either the “D” or “3” position the transmission will not provide engine braking. The transmission will freewheel when the throttle is removed. To engage engine braking, the shift lever must be put into the “1-2” position.

Instructions:
1) Remove the dash panels.
a) Start by removing the lower panel below the steering wheel. It is held on by screws on the bottom and clips on the top.
b) Remove the metal backing to this panel. It is screwed on from the top.
c) Remove the trim around the radio and climate controls. There are no screws in this panel, remove by gently prying around the edges starting from the bottom.
d) Remove the steering wheel cowl. There are screws on the bottom. Removal makes removing the upper dash easier.
e) Finally, remove the upper dash panel. This is the piece of dash around the instrument cluster and radio. It is attached with several screws and clips. The headlight switch must be pulled through this panel. It is a tight fit, but possible.
2) Drill the mounting holes in the dash for the switch using the template in the back of this manual. Figure 1 shows the best location to mount the switch. Use the existing decretive trim as a guide for centering the holes.
NOTE: Several Jeep owners use this location on the dash to mount other accessories and switches. Obviously this is not the only location possible for the Transmission Override. It can be mounted anywhere in the vehicle where there is room. The center console next to the shifter is a good alternative.
3) Install the switch plate onto the dash using the supplied #4 nuts, bolts, and lock washers. Bolt the switch onto the switch plate using the supplied nut and a 10mm wrench. Attach the knob and knob cover, correctly aligning the indicator to the letters.
4) Locate the Transmission Control Unit (TCU) using figure 2. The TCU is located under the steering wheel near the middle of the vehicle next to the gas pedal..
5) Clean the top of TCU and use the supplied tape to attach the Override Module to the TCU. See figure 3.
6) Unplug the factory connector from the TCU and plug the connector into the Override Module. Connect the Module’s Plug into the TCU. Figure 3 shows the TCU plugged into the Module.
7) Run the control wires from the Module to the switch’s future location in the dash.
Route the yellow control wire to the wiring harness connected to the back of the radio. This yellow wire is for override illumination.
Splice the yellow wire into the illumination wire in the wiring harness. In most cases the illumination wire is a black wire with a yellow stripe. If an aftermarket radio is used, refer to the radio’s users manual.
9) Connect the control wire to the Override Switch observing proper polarity.

FRONT: 1. Secure and properly block the tires of vehicle on a level concrete or asphalt surface. 2. Jack up front of vehicle and install jack stands under frame behind the lower link rear brackets. Remove tires and front shocks. 3. Loosen, but DO NOT remove the sway bar end link’s lower bolts at axle housing on both sides (see picture #1). Lower front axle down until coil springs become loose. Remove the bottom bolt and clip from left front coil spring (see picture #2). 4. Now remove both coil springs. 5. Install 2″ coil spring isolator pads on top (front spring) of the factory pads. Place the 2″ spacer in the lower mount for the rear spring. (See picture #4)

Raise jack up so that enough load is applied to hold coil springs in place. Reinstall spring bolt and clip at bottom of left front coil. Install new shocks. 6. Completely lower vehicle to the ground. Now tighten the sway bar endlink’s lower bolts loosened from step #3. POST INSTALLATION ChECKS/ALIGNMENT: • After installation is complete, double check that all nuts and bolts are tight. (Do not retighten nuts and bolts where Loctite was used.) Check to ensure there is adequate clearance between all rotating, mobile and fixed members. • Rotate driveshafts and check for interference at differential yoke and cardan joint. If necessary, lightly dress casting(s) and/or U-joint tabs in order to eliminate binding. • Check clearance between inner side wall of tires and links. It may be necessary to adjust steering stops. Notice: Adjust drag link so that steering wheel remains centered and wheel sweep from side to side remains equal.

Failure to do so may cause computer errors, odd handling characteristics and poor performance. Have a qualified alignment center check and realign to factory specifications. Notice: With vehicle securely elevated, carefully inspect and adjust to assure adequate clearance between tires (inner side wall), body and suspension components throughout range of steering and suspension travel. Additionally, carefully inspect and adjust to maintain clearance between suspension components, wiring harnesses, exhaust, brake and fuel lines, fuel tank, floorboards and body panels. Complete by properly torquing all fasteners. Notice: With vehicle now on floor, again check clearances, cycle steering lock to lock and test proper brake operation. Raised vehicle height requires realigning headlights. Consult your state’s lighting regulations. Wheels must be realigned by qualified service center to factory specifications. Notice: Re-torque fasteners after 500 miles. Thereafter, regularly inspect and re-torque as needed. Follow vehicle manufacturer’s recommended maintenance procedures and routinely inspect your vehicle components for unusual wear or off-road damage.

PRE-INSTALLATION
This kit is not recommended for trucks equipped with ABS brake systems or dual rear wheels. Use of this kit and/or larger tire and wheel combinations may reduce the effectiveness of ABS system and increase the amount of pedal pressure necessary to obtain a given braking distance.
1. Read carefully before proceeding with installation. This 4” lift kit is designed to be installed on ‘84-’86 Jeep Cherokee with standard “Command Trak” 5-speed transmissions. The original factory front drive shaft must be removed and replaced with new longer balanced drive shaft featuring 2 new universal joints, a new longer slip yoke and a new industrial flange on the transfer case end. The owners manual clearly states that the standard 5-speed transmission is not to be engaged and driven in 4-wheel drive on the highway or on smooth hard surfaces. This lift kit is not to be installed on vehicles with automatic “Select-Trak” transmissions. Contact your local dealer for new driveshaft.
2. Refer to OE service manual for proper disassembly/assembly procedures for OE components (like steering shaft, anything else). Consult the following instructions for special tools necessary for this installation.
3. Compare parts included in your system with the enclosed parts list. Placing hardware with compoents before you start may reduce installation time. Contact your Trail Master dealer if any parts are missing or appear to be different than those indicated on the parts list.

FRONT INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

1. Position hydraulic floor jack under front axle on the passenger side next to the differential. Raise axle so the tires are approximately one foot (1’) off the ground. Place adjustable jack stands under frame rails at a point 8” behind the lower strut arm frame mounting points. Lower axle until the vehicle rests on the jack stands and the shocks are partially extended. Leave the floor jack positioned under the axle.

2. Remove skid plate, if equipped, and discard. Remove both front tires and shocks. Remove front sway bar from frame and retain all parts. Remove tracking arm end at axle mounting point on passen- ger side and allow to drop free.

3. On each side, remove lower strut arm at frame and release arm to swing down from frame. Save all nuts and bolts. On each side, remove the lower strut arm adjustment bracket from inside the frame pocket by removing the 2 nuts on the rear of the pocket.

4. Locate left and right lower drop down brackets in the kit. These are the two large welded brackets. With the ears facing away from you, the bracket with the ear on the left side is the passenger side bracket. The bracket with the ear on the right side is the driv- ers side bracket. On each side slide the bracket into the lower frame pocket and install the two 3/8 x 1-1/4 bolts, washers and locknuts in the strut arm adjust- ment bracket holes. Position the 2-1/4 tube spacer bushing into the bracket. Install the 1/2 x 4-1/2 bolt and washer, from outside to the inside, through the original lower strut arm mounting hole. Tighten only the 3/8 bolts at this time.

5. Install the original lower strut arm adjustment brack- ets into the drop down brackets, just installed, using original nuts.

6. Remove upper strut arm ends from the frame brack- ets, on each side, and lower to the hole in the ear of the drop down bracket. Install the “Z” brackets pro- vided in the kit, positioning the large hole at the bot- tom so that the 1/2 x 4-1/2 bolt passes through the large hole. Install the 1/2 washer and locknut, finger tighten (the “Z” brackets will only fit one way). Posi- tion the 2” tube spacer bushing, provided in the kit, into the upper strut arm pocket. Line up the top hole of the “Z” bracket on the outside of the pocket and insert the 10mm x 80mm bolt with washer through the bracket and spacer. Finger tighten into frame. Position the free end of the upper strut arm between the ear on the lower bracket and the “Z” bracket, line up the holes and install the 10mm x 90mm bolt and washer from the outside to the inside. Install washer and locknut; tighten all bolts and nuts in this step.

7. Install lower strut arm ends in the drop down brack- ets using the original bolts and nuts, then tighten.

8. Remove coil spring retaining clips at axle. Lower axle sufficiently to remove coil springs. Install new coils and original retaining clips. Be sure coils are seated properly. Raise axle slightly to compress springs.

9. Locate original tracking arm mounting hole on the passenger side of the axle. Measure 3/4” from the center of the original hole on the same horizontal line toward the drivers side of the bracket, mark and center punch. Using drill with 3/8” drill bit, drill a hole through the center punched front of the bracket only. Repeat the same 3/4” measurement on the back of the bracket and center punch. Insert the 3/8” drill bit through the newly drilled hole and drill through the center punched mark on the back of the bracket. Position the free end of the tracking arm between the newly drilled holes and insert the original bolt. Locate the opening between the rear of the tracking arm bracket and the front axle, approximately 1-1/2” below the coil spring. The opening faces the driver’s side of the vehicle. Insert the square nut into the small opening, align with the original bolt and tighten. Suggestion: to position the square nut in the small opening, tape the nut to common screw driver using a loop of masking or duct tape.

10. Install new longer Trail Master shocks. 11. Attach front sway bar drop down brackets to the frame using the original bolts. Install the sway bar to the drop down brackets using the 3/8 x 1-1/4 bolts, washers and locknuts provided in the kit. Re-assem- ble the axle in original position. 12. Install the front wheels and lower vehicle to the ground.

REAR INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

1. Place hydraulic floor jack under center of rear axle housing and raise vehicle until wheels are 8” to 10” off the ground. Position adjustable jack stands on each side of the frame rails just in front of the leaf springs and lower the floor jack until the weight of the vehicle rests on both jack stands. Both wheels must be off the ground. Remove both wheels. Leave hydraulic floor jack in position so shocks are partially extended and remove both rear shocks.

2. Locate brake line tee on the driver’s side of the rear axle housing. Remove bolt and carefully separate tee from axle housing. Insert 2” tube spacer between tee and axle housing. Secure with 6mm x 80mm bolt and washer provided in the kit.

3. On vehicles equipped with brake equalizer, locate differential mounting bracket for brake equalizer, loosen top bolt and take bottom one out. Swing bracket up to extend and install extension bracket (flat bracket with hole in each end) to rear differential mounting bracket using 1/4 x 1 bolt, washer and locknut provided. Bolt opposite end of extension bracket to differential at original location using stock bolt.

4. Remove rear axle U-bolts on each side and lower axle away from springs. Remove center bolt from springs on both sides and remove lower leaf. Insert the add-a-leaf, provided in the kit, and replace bot- tom leaf. Tighten center bolt making sure leafs are straight with one another.

5. Raise axle to the springs. Secure axle to springs with original U-bolts. Ensure the sway bar bracket is attached to U-bolt top plate on both sides.

6. Install new shocks…

Ultimate capability
When you’re equipped with any one of these advanced 4WD systems, greater confidence, wherever you choose to drive, is simply part of the plan. Climb the rockiest hills and plow through the deepest snowdrifts with Quadra-Drive II™. With front and rear Electronic Limited-Slip Differentials (ELSD) that can help transfer up to 100 percent of available torque to any one wheel with traction, this Trail Rated® system provides ultimate traction in the most severe driving conditions. Stay on course with the innovative all-speed traction control built right into the Quadra-Trac II™ Trail Rated system. If slippage is detected, up to 100 percent of the available torque can be routed to the axle with the most traction. Or, shift into low range for even greater performance to conquer challenging conditions off-road. Standard on Laredo, Quadra-Trac I™(1) is a full-time system that operates smoothly, with no driver interaction required. Under normal driving conditions, torque is distributed 48 percent to the front wheels and 52 percent to the rear wheels. If wheel slippage occurs, the integrated traction control system helps transfer torque to those wheels with traction for secure 4WD capability when driving on-road during hazardous weather conditions.

Harnessing 420 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque, the SRT™ 4WD can launch the Grand Cherokee SRT8 from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in under five seconds on wet or dry pavement. Built to handle the burly 6.1L SRT HEMI® V8 engine, this hard-working system provides powerful on- NV245 ACTIVE (QUADRA-TRAC II) road traction; not intended for off-road use.

Jeep Grand Cherokee’s robust Electronic Stability Program (ESP™),(2) Electronic Roll Mitigation, Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) and Brake Assist partner with Trailer Sway Control (TSC) to help you and your trailer load safely reach your destination. With maximum towing power of up to 3266 kilograms (7200 pounds) when properly equipped, Grand Cherokee alternates brake pressure to help reduce trailer sway and improve handling in adverse towing conditions caused by crosswinds and traffic. When the network of ESP sensors detects that you are veering off your intended path, this comprehensive system instantaneously takes action to help keep you moving safely forward. Hill Start Assist (HSA) and Hill Descent Control (HDC) are available features that employ automatic braking and can be helpful when driving in urban as well as off-road areas with steep hills.

Jeep Trail Rated vehicles are designed to perform in a variety of off-road conditions identified by five performance categories: Articulation
The ability to keep tires in contact with the road, providing traction to climb over large obstacles. Ground Clearance The ability to drive over
large obstacles or logs in combination with approach/departure/breakover angles. Manoeuvrability The ability to navigate around obstacles that are tightly situated. Traction The ability to transfer power to the road or trail, along with the ability of the suspension to keep the wheels in contact with the terrain. Water Fording The ability to cross a specific depth of water at a specific speed.

Empowering choices
One of the keys to having fun out there is the ability to choose the engine that’s right for you and everything you’re into. No other vehicle in this class gives you more engine choices than Jeep® Grand Cherokee. More power. More torque. More efficiency. Enjoy them all with Grand Cherokee’s
available 5.7L HEMI® V8 engine. Redesigned for 2009 and featuring VVT and ingenious MDS fuel-saving technology, (1) this new HEMI engine seamlessly transitions to four-cylinder mode when power requirements are reduced. Put your foot down and all 357 hp and 389 lb-ft of torque roar back in a mere 40 milliseconds.

Standard on Laredo and Limited, the venerable 3.7L V6 delivers a fuel-efficient blend of smooth, quiet performance and powerful capability. The available 4.7L V8 engine combines workhorse toughness with flex-fuel versatility. It runs on gas, E85, or any mixture of the two. Either way you’ll be in command of 305 hp and 334 lb-ft of torque. Utilizing some of the same technology featured in its HEMI sibling, this advanced engine incorporates two spark plugs per cylinder and Electronic Throttle Control for optimum smoothness and power throughout its operating range.
Backing its formidable exhaust note with race-bred performance potential, the awesome 6.1L SRT HEMI V8 engine serves up a whopping 420 hp that can launch you and your soon-to-be-impressed guests from 0-96 km/h (0-60 mph) in less than five seconds.

King of the thrill
Jeep® Grand Cherokee SRT8 reigns supreme with the auspicious title of “Fastest Vehicle in its Class.”(1) Specially bolstered race-inspired leather-faced seating holds you in place as you command a 420-hp 6.1L SRT™ HEMI® V8 engine with 420 lb-ft torque and an estimated top speed of over 240 km/h (150 mph). Only the beefed-up SRT 4WD system with its active full-time transfer case and all-speed traction control has the guts to handle this kind of action. SRT8’s incredible swiftness is perfectly countered by its four-piston Brembo® Performance brake calipers and 14.2-inch front and 13.8-inch rear rotors – more race-proven engineering that brings the good times to a sure-footed halt at your command.
