Check your tire pressure every month to make sure it’s up to specification, especially before long trips or carrying extra weight. Lower pressure increases heat. Infrared photography of tires tested at high speed. Damaging heat increases as inflation pressure drops. For accuracy, check your inflation pressure with a tire gauge when tires are cold. Driving heats up tires and makes the reading incorrect.

a) Remove tire valve cap.
b) Place the end of the tire gauge over valve.
c) Press the tire gauge straight and firmly until the scale extends.
d) If needed, increase pressure and recheck with the tire gauge.
e) Replace valve cap.

TIRE ROTATION For maximum mileage, rotate your tires according to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations (consult your vehicle owner’s manual), or if not provided, rotate every 5,000 miles using a rotation pattern such as below (see “Radial Tire Rotation” in this manual). Place a penny in the tire tread grooves as shown. If you can see the top of Lincoln’s head, the tire is worn out and needs to be replaced. In addition to tire damage, improper inflation pressure may also:

• Adversely affect vehicle ride and handling.
• Reduce tire tread wear.
• Affect fuel economy.

Therefore, follow these important recommendations for tire and vehicle safety, mileage, and economy:

• Always keep the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended inflation pressure in all your tires, including the spare.
• Check their pressure monthly and before long trips or carrying extra weight.

Your vehicle’s tire information placard and/or owner’s manual will tell you the recommended cold inflation pressure for all your tires, including the spare. Examples of placards are shown in Figures 1 and 2. Your placard may look differently and have different tire and loading information than that shown in either of the figures. You must check the driver’s-side door edge or door jamb area for the actual placard that applies to your vehicle. For questions about locating or understanding the tire information placard, consult your vehicle owner’s manual or ask a qualified tire service professional.

Maximum Pressure Indicated on the Tire Sidewall: This is the maximum permissible inflation pressure for the tire only. The vehicle manufacturer’s recommended tire pressures may be lower than, or the same as, the maximum pressure indicated on the tire sidewall. The vehicle manufacturer’s specification of tire pressure is limited to your Aston Martin vehicle and takes into account your vehicle’s load, ride, and handling characteristics, among other criteria. Since there may be several possible vehicle applications for a given tire size, a vehicle manufacturer may choose a different inflation pressure specification for that same size tire on a different vehicle. Therefore, always refer to the inflation pressure specifications on the vehicle tire information placard and/or in your vehicle owner’s manual.

Different Tire Pressures for the Front and Rear Tires: For some vehicles, the recommended front and rear inflation pressures may be different (such as in the example shown in Figure 2). Make sure you take this into account during inflation pressure checks and when rotating tires. Pressure Loss: Tires can lose 1 psi (7 kPa) per month under normal conditions and can lose 1 psi (7 kPa) for every 10°F (5.6°C) temperature drop. A puncture, leaking valve, or other damage could also cause inflation pressure loss. If a tire loses more than 2 psi (14 kPa) per month, have it checked by a qualified tire service professional.

TIPS FOR SAFE TIRE INFLATION Inflating an unsecured tire is dangerous. If it bursts, it could be hurled into the air with explosive force resulting in
serious personal injury or death. Never inflate a tire unless it is secured to the vehicle or a tire mounting machine.

• Check your tire pressures, including your spare tire, monthly and before long trips or carrying extra weight. Be sure to use an accurate pressure gauge.

• Check inflation pressure when the tires are “cold.” Tires are considered “cold” when the vehicle has been parked for three hours or more, or if the vehicle has been driven less than a mile (1.6 km) at moderate speed.
• Never release pressure from a hot tire in order to reach the recommended cold tire pressure. Normal driving causes tires to run hotter and inflation pressure to increase. If you reduce inflation pressure when your tires are hot, you may dangerously under-inflate your tires.
• If it is necessary to adjust inflation pressure when your tires are “hot,” set their pressure to 4 psi (28 kPa) above the recommended cold inflation pressure. Recheck the inflation pressure when the tires are cold.
• If your tires lose more than 2 psi (14 kPa) per month, the tire, the valve, or wheel may be damaged. Consult a qualified tire service professional for an inspection.
• Use valve caps to keep the valves clear of debris and to help guard against inflation pressure loss.

Evaluation and maintenance of your tires is important to their performance and the service they provide to you. Over time and/or through use, the condition of a tire can change from exposure to everyday road conditions, the environment, damaging events such as punctures, and other external factors. You should visually inspect your tires on a regular basis throughout their life, and you should have your tires periodically evaluated by a qualified tire service professional when your vehicle is serviced such as routine maintenance intervals, oil changes, and tire rotations. In particular, note the following tips for spotting tire damage:

• After striking anything unusual in the roadway, have a qualified tire service professional demount the tire and inspect it for damage. A damaged tire may not show any visible signs of harm. Yet, the tire may suddenly fail without warning, a day, a week, or even months later.
• Inspect your tires for cuts, cracks, splits or bruises in the tread and sidewall areas. Bumps or bulges may indicate a separation within the tire body. If you see damage or unusual condition, have your tire inspected by a qualified tire service professional. It may be necessary to have it
removed from the wheel for a complete inspection.
• Inspect your tires for adequate tread depth. When the tire is worn to the built-in indicators at 2/32 inch (1.6 mm) or less tread groove depth, or the tire cord or fabric is exposed, the tire is dangerously worn and must be replaced immediately.
• Inspect your tires for uneven wear. Wear on one side of the tread or flat spots in the tread may indicate a problem with the tire or vehicle. Consult a qualified tire service professional.
• Inspect your wheels also. If you have a bent or cracked wheel, it must be replaced.
• Don’t forget to check the spare tire.

From the outset, the V8 Vantage was endurance tested at speed, including a 10,000 km durability sign off test at the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife. The following year, the car returned, this time to race following the efforts of a small factory team of dedicated engineers and technicians. Starting with a standard V8 Vantage, the team built an entrant for the 2006 Nürburgring 24 hour race with Aston Martin CEO Dr Ulrich Bez leading the driving team. The distinctive yellow car (nicknamed Rose) was placed 24th overall from a field of over 200 starters.

Following this remarkable achievement, it was decided to build a limited production run of 24 similar race cars in celebration and the Vantage N24 was born. Now known as the Vantage GT4, the race- going Vantage features Aston Martin’s uprated 4.7 litre V8 engine, with some 60 cars having now been built following the initial run. In 2008, a limited edition run of 240 Coupes and 240 Roadsters was launched. Known as the N400, the car featured a 400 bhp version of the 4.3 litre V8 engine.

The new N420 Special Edition represents a further evolution of Aston Martin’s production technology and engineering skills, creating a dynamic and distinctive limited edition. The 4.7 litre V8 engine produces 420 bhp, and a peak torque of 470 Nm, providing exceptional performance figures of 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.9 seconds, with a maximum speed of 290 km/h (180 mph).

The new edition will be strictly limited, with just 420 Coupe models and 420 Roadsters to be built at Aston Martin’s factory in Gaydon, Warwickshire.

The N420’s enhanced exterior design details include a more aggressive flared sill design, a platinum finish front grille and clear rear lamp lens, as well as a weight-saving carbon-fibre front splitter, rear diffuser and carbon-fibre side strakes.

Perfectly complementing these carbon- fibre features, the N420 is available in the special edition Carbon Black paint as standard, and may also be specified from a portfolio of specially developed Race Collection colour schemes (available as an option), including Asia Pacific White, Aston Martin Racing Green, Rose Yellow (named after the original N24 race car), Elwood Blue, Kermit Green, (the nicknames of the subsequent Nürburgring-challenging N24s), Modena Black and GT2 Concept Blue.

Signified by a unique Graphitic finish to its tailpipes, the N420’s new lightweight Sports Exhaust system features a reprofiled exterior design to support undercar airflow. The exhaust’s revised tuning and revised engine management system work in conjunction with the sports tailpipes to produce a distinctive exhaust note in keeping with the N420’s sporting character.

Moreover, the Sports Exhaust also saves a total of 2.8 kg over that of the standard car. The N420 also features lightweight materials, such as carbon-fibre, which can be found in components such as the front splitter, rear diffuser and lightweight seats. These combine to save 28 kg over the standard V8 Vantage. Even the iconic Aston Martin side strakes are fashioned from carbon-fibre, saving 1.5 kg per car.

In 1987 when Ford Motor Company acquired 75 per cent of the shares – the remainder was split evenly between the Livanos family and Gauntlett – and long term stability, finally, arrived. That same year, James Bond was reunited with Aston Martin, driving an AM V8 in The Living Daylights, while the following year, 1988, the new Virage appeared.

Over the next five or six years, life at Aston Martin continued largely unchanged, but things were happening behind the scenes as Ford planned the future for its new acquisition. Long-serving executive chairman Victor Gauntlett handed over control to another legend, Walter Hayes CBE, a former Ford of Europe Vice-Chairman. There was also another return to competition, with a creditable 6th overall for the AMR1 in the 1989 World Endurance Championship and plans were hatched for a new small Aston Martin.

The new car could not come soon enough. The early 1990s saw a recession hit the UK and sales of the big V8-powered Virage and Virage Volante dwindled: in 1992, just 46 cars were built. So it was that in 1993 at the Geneva Show, Aston Martin proudly showed the new DB7, a model imbued with the spirit of those classic DB models of the 1960s. Indeed, the entire project was encouraged by Sir David Brown, who died at the end of 1993.

The DB7 marked a significant change in Aston Martin’s fortunes and work practices. For starters it was built not at Newport Pagnell but at a new facility near Bloxham in Oxfordshire with far more automation than had traditionally been the case. Production of the DB7 started in late 1994, the same year that Ford acquired a 100 per cent holding in the company, and the rewards were immediate. In 1995, the first full year of the DB7, Aston Martin produced more than 700 cars – an all-time record for the company.

With the arrival of the convertible DB7 Volante in 1996, production has continued at similarly high levels making the DB7 easily the most successful model in Aston Martin’s history. By the end of 2001, total DB7 production had passed the 5,000 milestone and outstripped the combined total production of DB5 and DB6 models.

This same period saw a new V8 model developed from the Virage, culminating in the hugely powerful V8 Vantage, the last example of which was delivered in October 2000. The ‘V’ car traditional continued at Newport Pagnell with the 2001 launch of the V12-powered Vanquish.

In 2002 Aston Martin unveiled the first purpose-built facility in the history of the company at Gaydon in Warwickshire. The DB9 was the first car to be built at the facility, which will be the home of all future Aston Martins.

The Aston Martin Vantage was the perfect step up from her Porsche 997S. A totally new level of driving experience came with the car. Never a day goes by without people giving her Aston the thumbs up. That rarely happened with her former Porches. But, still, something was missing for fun cruises an iPod.

Leather everywhere and the jewel-like instrument panel absolutely required the install neither detract nor permanently mar. The question was where to mount an iPod. The instrument panel and dash are completely taken up. Attaching a normal iPod mount would creately an ungainly appearance. The glove box would hide the iPod, but make controlling the iPod too difficult. I decided to try mounting a Nano inside the “coin holder” That trifling space would need to hold the iPod and all the needed circuitry to feed a signal into the radio system. I would have preferred a direct connection. I’ve previously hacked in a direct connection in a Lexus, but probing cables and injecting signals in hopes of finding the right wires was more surgery than I was willing to do in an Aston Martin. So, a FM transmitter was the practical choice.

Kensington produces an FM RDS transmitter/car charger (model 33364). The RDS feature allows track information to appear on the radio display. The challenge was fitting the entire adapter and iPod into a volume which is perhaps half that of the adapter itself. Taking the circuit boards out of the casing, shortening the interconnecting wires, trimming away excess PC board, and chopping the power plug short enough to fit flush with the power socket allowed everything to fit. This installation is NOT for the feint of heart. Good general mechanical and electronics skill are needed. I’m presenting this to show it can be done, but by no means is this a step by step guide. I won’t be posting more detailed instructions. If you need more detailed instructions, you don’t have the basic skill set needed to attempt this installation. Get someone who has the skills to do it for you. This is how the Aston looks AFTER the iPod is installed.

The Nano is revealed by opening the door. Otherwise the install is completely invisible. No permanent modifications were made. The iPod and the FM transmitter circuitry can be made to fit into that tiny space. The iPod controls are easily accessed to pause, play, go forwards and backwards. I strongly discourage selecting tracks and playlists while driving. Here you see the Kensington adapter’s circuit boards removed from their casings. The smaller board is has the plug which goes into the iPod. Because the length of the iPod Nano plus the circuit is longer than the coin holder, the plug board must be extensively modified to make it fit. By the time I was done, a significant portion of that circuit board’s rear was removed and the cable reattached to exit the bottom of the board. Luckily, the main board did not require physical modification. The power plug portion of the casing was cut free from the rest of the casing to form a plug which is much shorter than normal. It needs to fit flush with the socket once inserted or else the iPod and support shelf won’t fit.

A flush fit plug also means you need a way to remove the plug once inserted. I placed a loop of nylon fishing line through a hole drilled in the plug’s plastic. Pulling on the loop allows one to remove the plug. Next you see the modified parts and shortened wires mounted on the bottom of a plastic shelf using hot melt glue. The shelf was fashioned from a plastic electrical junction box and sculpted to fit within the coin holder. Copious grinding and beveling was needed to make the front edge of the shelf thin enough. You’ll notice the portion of the shelf which would otherwise lie over the power plug was cut away to allow more space. The shelf was intentionally sculpted slightly too small, then covered with rubber fusion tape to make a nice black, non-slip surface for the iPod to rest upon.

Looking for something sleek and sporty? Solid and stately? Today’s breed of luxury autos offers everyone from performance aficionados to demanding seekers of mobile opulence a dizzying spectrum of premium metal. Learn about the leading and lesser known luxury car makers who elevate motoring to a fine art with Elite Traveler’s guide to the finest automobiles on the planet.

Aston Martin With an astounding racing heritage, a design history that has always stressed innovation while retaining a signature elegance (and, of course, the undying loyalty of a certain British secret agent), more than any other brand, Aston Martin evokes a unique balance of performance and styling in the world of sport and grand touring luxury cars. Founded in 1913, under the post-war leadership of Sir David Brown (the “DB” in the model names), the company established a solid racing reputation with a series of sporty offerings capped by the iconic DB5 of James Bond fame in 1963. Today, from its state-of-the-art facility in Gaydon in Warwickshire, the company, recently taken under private ownership after a stint as part of Ford’s PAG (Performace Auto Group), produces cars with a distinct blend of thrilling performance and understated but aggressive styling: “Like a tough guy in a dinner jacket,” is how Director of Design Marek Reichman explained it to me once, and that says it all.

Bugatti The golden era of luxury automaker Bugatti dates back to the 1920s and 1930s, when designer Ettore Bugatti produced coach-built luxury saloons like the Royale as well as legendary racers like the Type 59 Grand Prix for a select group of European elite from his workshops in Molsheim, France. Today, under the auspices of parent company Volkswagen AG, a new era for the company begins with the introduction of the Veyron 16.4, probably the most exacting, innovative and envelopepushing production car available (at a cool $1.5 million). Mining Bugatti’s uncompromising heritage of producing exclusive automobiles that are as much art as engineering, the Veyron’s development essentially started by throwing out the established car-making rulebook and focusing purely on innovation and “out-of-the-box” engineering to deliver a singularly masterful vehicle that both defines a cutting-edge experience and is surprisingly accessible and easy to drive, thus easy to love.

FAST TIMES
As befits such a rare, exceptional and innovative vehicle, this Parmigiani bugatti type 370 timepiece, by haute horologiste Michel Parmigiani, was in
development nearly as long as the car itself and picks up on the company’s idea of pure innovation with a superbly unique and elegant approach to chronometry. About $200,000.

Audi Immaculate and passionate engineering and a constant devotion to innovation has taken this German luxury brand from a somewhat conservative, fine sedan starting point and placed it firmly in a leadership role in technological integration as well as racing. This point was driven home for me recently when I attended the 24 Hours of Le Mans and enjoyed hearing the almos calm, smooth-running, diesel-powered Audi R10s whip around the track in competition with (and oftentimes declare victory over) the chortling, standard-fuel entries from other performance car companies. That spirit of embracing unique technologies that succeed in reinforcing the brand’s luxury underpinnings is abundantly apparent across its whole line, from the directly Le Mans-inspired R8 sport coupe to its terrific entry-level Quattro models to its commitment to diesel engines to its partnership with audio leader Bang & Olufsen, which produces an exceptional optional stereo package for Audi’s top models

BMW When it comes to the performance/luxury formula of high-end motoring, more than any other large-scale manufacturer, BMW consistently delivers pure driving thrills across its entire line, from its muscular M program offerings to its marvelous 7 Series flagship to its zippy Z4 roadsters to its new “SAV” X6 crossovers to its universally praised 3 Series models. This thrill factor is particularly apropos since the Bayerische Motoren Werke AG company started life in 1913 as a motorcycle maker and still continues its tradition of exceptional two-wheel vehicle manufacturing. BMW’s M program (the “m” is for “motorsports”), in particular, draws from the German company’s heritage of racing successes to deliver unparalleled power, dynamics and handling to high-end buyers, constantly re-inventing what a road car can really do.

To be a Jaguar enthusiast is to be an undying romantic, I’ll admit to it. If you think back to the quintessentially British marque’s post-war era of classically beautiful and powerful cars (as well as its share of racing victories), like the stunning long-bonneted E-Type or the regal Mark II, and take a gander at the reinvented lightweight modern models painstakingly crafted by design head Ian Callum (one of the industry’s most skilled, and most intuitive), you can still feel that romance and passion. With a business history a bit more chaotic than its uncompromising heritage of design and performance, Jaguar now has a new, deep-pocketed home with international conglomerate Tata that promises a focused and attentive approach to fostering the legendary brand. Previous owner Ford’s attempts to open up the line to more entry-level buyers proved to be a misstep; Jaguar is simply a luxury brand, period. Advanced offerings like the company’s R program (with its throbbing supercharged engines) and stunning Vanden Plas interior package for the flagship XJ, help plant that luxury flag firmly within a line of gorgeous, sensual performance automobiles.

Lexus In the late 1980s Toyota challenged the reigning protocols of luxury car-making by audaciously suggesting that leveraging the expertise and efficiency of mass production could yield superb vehicles on par with, or even superior to, their existing counterparts. Lexus succeeded not only in changing the playing field forever, but also succeeded in astronomical sales and a rapid-fire marketing success that almost defies logic.
The rest, as they say, is history. Harnessing only the best-of-breed developments from the flurry of ideas and innovations that are endemic to the competitive large-scale automotive industry, Lexus has only gotten better and better at challenging those same precepts (the first true-luxury hybrid in the LS 600h sedan, the remarkably nimble IS-F sport coupe that evokes the “P” word in terms of performance and handling) and continuing to win over the hearts and minds of the luxury car buyer..

Lamborghini with the Reventon and Aston Martin with the One-77 have introduced a new genre in the automotive sector – the MegaCar. While Bugatti can rightly lay claim to being the top of the heap in SuperCar sector and still king in the performance stakes it unbelievably does not possess the same over-the-top extremeness of the Reventon. The twenty owners may experience more incredulity from the kids for their Reventon if one was to be parked beside a Bugatti, and if their father grew up watching Star Wars, Batman and Top Gun – probably from them too.

It will undoubtably be a favorite toy for their owners, one that they drive out of their toy box often. The name Reventon comes from a bull that killed toreador Felix Guzman in 1943. he car is essentially the ultimate Murcielago with a long, long list of changes and enhancements to justify the one million dollar price tag. What the lucky ir ends of Lamborghini get who were given the opportunity to purchase before its unveiling at Frankfurt is a hand-built masterpiece.

Designed at Lamborghini’s Centro Stile (Style Center) in Sant’Agata Bolognese and working directly with the Lamborghini Technical Department and Development Division, Stephan Winkelmann, chairman and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini, S.p.A. says “The Reventon is the most extreme of them all, a true automotive superlative. Our designers at the Lamborghini Style Center took the technical base of the Murciel-ago LP640 and compressed and intensiied its DNA, its genetic code,” The initial brieing meeting at Centro Stile must have been fun.

Think F117, think Darth Vader…. think Tumbler in a wind tunnel – don’t hold back people. What they delivered was a coherently angular stealth ighter for the road, clad in beautifully formed Carbon Fibre coated in a new paint color called Grey Barra that’s unique to Reventon, the black wheels are accented with carbon-iber inserts. Detail and technology abounds with LEDs and Xenon headlamps to turn is into a night ighter. At the rear are highly-styled taillamps illuminated by specially developed heatproof LEDs.

What you see white Aston Martins on the road? In reality, not very much, unless – of course – you are one of the few who own painted in such a distinctive color, whether white or Dover Morning Frost. In fact, in one degree, such as Aston Martins are everywhere – there is a splash of white in the paint of almost everyone.

This is because the first color is often used for the exact color of the paint required by an owner’s car in for service, repair, repair or modification at Aston Martin Works Service mix. And now you see how many Aston Martins with damaged paint? It answers, as you might expect, is even less than the number of white Aston Martins. In other words, virtually none. Of course, this reflects the care with which the owners look after their cars (remember that even if some rain on their pride and joy), but the overall look of immaculate Aston Martins on the road thanks to modern advances in the paint.

Compared with the cellulose of the 1940s and the TPA (thermoplastic acrylic) era that followed, paint used by Aston Martin’s Gaydon factory and factory in Newport Pagnell Works Service has never been so durable than today’s water based paint used on all Aston Martins since the birth of the V12 Vanquish. “We all remember the car that dad used to wash, leather and was on a Sunday afternoon,” recalls Kingsley Riding-Felce, Director of Aston Martin Works Service and Customer Relations. “It used to shine like a new penny. But actually painted in a highly unstable material called nitro-cellulose, which would gradually fade away. Polishing would glow but it was not a sustainable, long f Inish by any means, and it would eventually degrade very badly.

Vinny Vanquish: an underworld character of American TV series “The Sopranos” or even the New York Mob really? Or maybe a famous crooner, who held the bars of America’s East and West Coast working in the 1950s with the folk songs and traditional ballads to beat down and broken heart? In fact, Vinny “Vanquish” is much closer to home.

Step by Vinny Ryan, one of the Newport Pagnell Works Service team since moving from Spain in 2002, where he worked in an Aston Martin dealer. “Vinny Vanquish? Yes, I’ve heard that one or two times, “laughs Vinny. The nickname, the 38-year-old explains, is the gift of the colleagues in honor of Vinny’s seemingly unlimited devotion to the Aston Martin of that name. “The thing is, I just love that car,” he confesses.

The Vanquish is a line end would you imagine Vinny has to be broken. But for many, the Vanquish is still a work in progress. And they will, Works Service, with unparalleled experience, knowledge and understanding of the Vanquish, are at the center of this ongoing work. First there is the manual conversion, now also available in the U.S. market, while the engraving of the Vanquish The chrome fuel cap is just one of many ways Works Service can further personalize the car. On a larger scale than that total, Andrew McCloskey, a colleague of Vinny’s, just monitoring the application of a glass roof. “Not easy,” he confesses. “But we have it. “

The Vanquish owners love that compels additional subtleties and nuances to their personal pride and joy, that will be powered by Works Department for the coming years searching, lies at the basis of Vinny’s own dedication to the car. From Birkenhead and with a fresh approach to a call that a denial of any risk pregnant pause, he dates his love affair with the Vanquish until 2001 when a dealership training, he collected a full understanding of exactly how the car is done. “Watching the process, I thought to myself, this is – I want everything back that makes such a big car master. “
